Not only was he an outstanding sportsman, but he’s a great pundit for cycling events and the Olympics. A sad thought he likely won’t guide us through the action in the velodrome at LA2028.

Met him at the London Bike Show in 2016 and by this news would probably be the first celebrity to die who I have met before.

 

Sounds like a candidate for 2026 and every year thereafter he's around for.

The age that PSA tests can be asked for via a GP is 50+, so yes this is an unusual case. I haven't read the interview (behind paywall), but wouldn't be surprised if in his final years he tries to campaign for increasing test access among other related things.

He talks about in his interview. He has strong family history of disease.. 

 

‘I notice him practise them when he mentions that both his grandfather and father had prostate cancer, but he never had a PSA test — a blood test that can help to diagnose the disease — because the NHS doesn’t test asymptomatic men on request before they turn 50. The implication that a simple test could have saved his life is left pointedly unsaid, and he swiftly interrupts his appeal for earlier screening to tell me instead about a friend who got his PSA levels tested only because of Hoy’s diagnosis.

Sadly yes but he does say the chemo has worked to the best of the doctors expectations so it might be longer.

My dad in his 60's in a check up got told he had prostate cancer (early stage). He then told my cousin and his tennis partner. They got checked out and they had it as well. Because of PSA testing.

 

Sadly my friend's father died about 8-10 years ago because his was discovered too late.

Modern medicine works wonders, but given he's been given 2-4 years, we can't expect much more unless he's very lucky.

Poor kids is an understatement. Do we know how aggressive her form of MS is? I don't care to speculate about the outcome here, but it's not very good.

The problem is that the PSA test is not completely accurate and can throw up false positives and false negatives, leading to unnecessary surgery or stress. Only 25% of patients with elevated PSA levels are subsequently found to have cancer.

I had a similar issue with a blood test for a much rarer cancer (doctor claimed I had Polycythemia vera based off a simple blood panel, because my red blood cell count was only slightly higher than normal)... Turns out I just consumed too much vinegar. Luckily he was smart enough to order a second blood test before referring me to any specialists, which turned out normal because I abstained from putting vinegar on my chips for a month... Sure caused me a lot of stress though, but it wouldn't stop me from getting tests in the future if necessary.

1 less prostate and 6 weeks after that was back to cycling. He's still annoying as ever though.

It sounds very aggressive and she and her husband have chosen the less risky but possibly less effective MS treatment. His interview says some days she can’t open the door without assistance. A lot more life changing than many people with MS.

 Indeed I could, but the Unwritten Rules specifically state that 'one mayst not start a thread for a celebrity with a nebulous cancer diagnosis, lest a vengeful admin doth come down and strike it closed with a mighty "tut-tut" '

 

 

Anyway, good on Hoy for his stance on this horrible outcome. Hope he'll continue to be vocal throughout.
