Who Should Be On The Deathlist 2025?

Recommended Posts

36 minutes ago, Steve said:

@tracy as you are one of my heroes on this forum along with @Thatcher for your death notices are you in a position to provide a list of suggestions/ideas?

I posted some names a few pages ago. If I was in charge of the DL, I think my 25 new names, off the top of my head, would be something like:

  1. David Attenborough
  2. Sidney Cooke
  3. Len Deighton
  4. Antonia Fraser
  5. Frank Gehry
  6. Berry Gordy
  7. Lee Grant
  8. Tippi Hedren
  9. Douglas Hurd
  10. David Irving
  11. Sophie Kinsella
  12. Tom Lehrer
  13. Ken Livingstone
  14. Jim Lovell
  15. José Mujica
  16. Rupert Murdoch
  17. Yoko Ono
  18. Joan Plowright
  19. Dan Rather
  20. Eva Marie Saint
  21. Ian Smith
  22. Johnnie Walker
  23. James Watson
  24. Harvey Weinstein
  25. Peter Yarrow

The present list being a trainwreck, and the lack of many new certs, puts a real damper on things. I expect a lot of misses. However, with something like the above and whichever 25 they keep I wouldn't think ~15 hits is impossible.

Risky bet but...Michael Bolton?

A few brain tumor communities I am in or have visited have judged he's likely suffering from a more severe brain tumor (well, brain cancer) especially due to the emergency surgery, visible weakness and confusion on stage last year.

His O2 show was postponed with a full year around the summer and seems that back in October nearly all his shows, atleast all before July 2025, were postponed indefinitely.

There's also this health update his nephew provided in August that feels a bit ominous:

“He’s the strongest person I know. I mean, honestly, he is determined. Every day he’s getting better,” Adam told EW. “He communicates so much with his eyes, and the power that’s behind them is just reassuring to everybody that this man is built out of something special.”

He later clarified to EW that Michael is still able to speak and sing, and added, “He is well and recovering very well.”

(He was also seemingly unable to send a video message)

Anyways, he has not given any details to the public about what type of brain tumor he has, god knows when his last appearance anywhere was and from a quick look on his Facebook and Instagram I get a feeling he might not be managing his own social medias anymore.

Conclusion: I hope I am wrong and have missed something, but it feels like he is either:

1) terminally ill, family is avoiding media attention and the July 2025 O2 show will again be postponed around March or April if he's alive.

2) Not ill, but not the same as he was before - perhaps a massive benign tumor that fucked something up.

How is he supposed to live without you? :D

Annoyingly I always got him and Richard Marx mixed up for no apparent reason. Even more annoyingly, Bolton doesn't start having UK top 30 hits until 1990, so not a qualifier for next year's TOTP team!

(Still not decided whether to continue with this team into the 90s or go back to 1980 from 2026. Always assuming I'm still kicking in a year!).

I'm doing my short-list now and 10 minutes ago he came into my head.

I've seen Douglas Hurd mentioned several times here, but what specific health problems does he have?

I remember someone on here saying something about Alzheimers a while back bur I have never seen anything more than that about his health.

He is mentioned a lot I think because not only is he due to turn 95 in March but he was a household name in Britain. He was also very active in public life regularly appearing in public and giving interviews then nearly 10 years ago now he resigned from the House of Lords and has not been heard from since. He was passionately against Brexit and spoke out against the idea before the referendum but to my knowledge never commented  after the referendum as by that time he retreated from public life.

I saw him about three years ago on the Celebrity Dating Game where he was the pianist and singer, and I noticed he had a tremor throughout, I was leaning towards Parkinson's or maybe a brain tumor, and I've noticed this in other appearances over the past five years as well. Not the biggest fan, but it's still unfortunate.

Ronnie Wood definitely looks to be more gaunt than usual. I know they did pick him previously in 2018 when he publicly announced his cancer, but I feel like he could be a sneaky boomerang pick for the Deathlist.

Great list, would be great but it just misses Don King, John Williams, Lee Meriwether, Vera Miles, King Salman and Sophie Kinsella imo

Here's my personal thoughts on what the list should be like. Misses will be inevitable but I think a list like this would atleast reach 14 or something hits:

Keep (25)

1. Jimmy Carter (hospice)

2. Pete Murray (frail years ago)

3. Cleo Laine (very frail)

4. Sonny Rollins (very old, terminally ill with pulmonary fibrosis for longer than the expectancy for someone much younger)

5. Imelda Marcos (diabetes, serious heart problems, ministrokes, pneumonia hospitalisation this year)

6. Ted Turner ("late stages" of lewy body dementia for a while now)

7. Roberta Flack (ALS, other ailments)

8. Esther Rantzen (terminal lung cancer)

9. Norman Tebbit (said to be very ailing, heart problems etc.)

10. Tom Brokaw (multiple myeloma for more than a decade, recently in 24/7 care)

11. Gene Hackman (looked death warmed up this year, massive heart problems)

12. Joanne Woodward (perennial dementia sufferer)

13. Stanley Baxter (no public appearances in years, care home, said he has memory loss back around 2020)

14. Nigel Starmer-Smith (bruce willis type dementia, bedbound for years, overdue)

15. Noam Chomsky (paralyzed from a massive stroke)

16. Dennis Skinner (very ill for very long - heart operations, cancer, alleged mild dementia)

17. James Whale (longtime cancer sufferer allegedly now living on experimental meds, give him one last chance)

18. Jean-Marie Le Pen (heart failure, pulmonary oedema, stroke)

19. Willie Nelson (emphysema, other chronic health conditions)

20. Denis Law (mixed dementia for years)

21. Sly Stone (advanced COPD and no news in ages)

22. Linda Nolan (boring perennial cancer sufferer allegedly now living on experimental meds #2. Give her one last chance)

23. Buzz Aldrin (former heavy drinker, a couple of health scares in the past, on oxygen in his latest appearance)

24. Sandy Gall (looked unrecognizable here over three years ago and as far as I know has not made appearances since)

25. Dick Van Dyke (looks healthy but reading between the lines sounds like he's suffering from some severe illness. Anyways, turning 100 with a history of lung collapses, peripheral neuropathy, pneumonia bouts, mild emphysema etc)

Drop (20) going down from the worst drop

1. Vanessa Redgrave (emphysema for a long time + heart attack. Stableish for years now but you never know)

2. Hans Blix (TBE, weeks in ICU some years ago, housebound)

3. Clint Eastwood (increasingly frail, some health issues in the past, lost girlfriend recently)

4. Tom Baker (weight loss, health issues but seems to have been doing great for a year or two now)

5. Brigitte Bardot (serious respiratory problems)

6. Daniel Barenboim (does not seem as ill as we thought?)

7. Dick Cheney (enormous heart problems, see this - seems to have outlived all odds and the transplant won't last forever, but too stable now)

8. Alan Greenspan (boring, just very old)

9. Robert Wagner (old, COPD, but doesn't seem ill enough yet)

10. Prunella Scales (perennial dementia sufferer who is taking decades to die)

11. Mel Brooks (very old but seems healthy and active)

12. Josef Fritzl (too stable for my liking)

13. Pope Francis (recurring health problems, but has seemed better this year)

14. Louis Farrakhan (too stable for my liking)

15. Joe Bugner (severe dementia, but young and no reports of great decline)

16. Desmond Morris (seemingly healthy nonagenarian)

17. Patricia Routledge (seemingly healthy nonagenarian and younger than most of the other healthy nonagenarians on the list)

18. Robert Duvall (yet another boringly healthy nonagenarian)

19. Raul Castro (looks, sounds amazing despite previous cancer rumors)

20. Julie Walters (past cancer)

Return (5):

1. Yoko Ono (lewy body dementia for ages, other ailments)

2. Liza Minnelli (ailing for a very long time now)

3. David Attenborough (very old, more quiet these days and should stay on the list until his death)

4. Douglas Hurd (very quiet for a long time, stroke in the past and said to suffer from other health problems)

5. Mike Ditka (strokes and heart attacks, has been in 24/7 care recently)

Add (20):

1. Michael Tilson Thomas (glioblastoma, has outlived the expectations)

2. Mahathir Mohamad (enormous heart problems, very old, regular hospitalisations)

3. Ruth Buzzi (dementia for ages, strokes)

4. Tippi Hedren (advanced dementia)

5. Sam Nujoma (tons of hospitalisations)

6. Ian Smith (Ian Smith Cancer)

7. Joan Plowright (Very frail/ill for years according to forum members)

8. Eva Marie Saint (very old, forum favourite)

9. Antonia Fraser (last rites almost two years ago, kidney failure and a plethora of ailments)

10. Sophie Kinsella (glioblastoma #2)

11. Peter Yarrow (Longtime cancer sufferer in hospice)

12. Sidney Cooke (how is he still alive?)

13. Tom Lehrer (forum favourite, very frail for years)

14. Geoffrey Boycott (cancer + heart problems, ICU hospitalisation earlier)

15. Jean Marsh (very frail, past health history includes a stroke and a heart attack)

16. Rupert Murdoch (tons of health problems)

17. King Salman of Saudi Arabia (dementia, tons of health problems)

18. David Irving (serious health problems, 24/7 care)

19. Jose Mujica (cancer, kidney problems, vasculitis and other health issues)

20. Michael Bolton (see earlier posts)

Ion Iliescu (b. 1930) : was said to be really ill and hospitalized last year, condition worsened this year. I'd say he's famous enough, having served as the president of Romania twice during a very difficult period (Post-Ceausescu) and recently being prosecuted for crimes against humanity. He is far too overlooked, and it doesn't seem like he has much time left.

Don King (b. 1930) : supposedly battling major health issue, which I tend to believe despite his own denial. Haven't been seen for a while now (or am I missing something ?), hospitalized last year and 94 next year + famous enough.

Lee Meriwether (b. 1934) : A-list actress who turns 90 in 2025 with Alzheimer disease. Her own daughter dying of the same type of Alzheimer as such a young age makes me think she's a serious contender for next year's list.

Lee Grant (b. 1925) : another A-List actress far too overlooked, turning 100 in 2025. Overdue.

Katherine Jackson (b. 1930) : maybe the less famous and less likely to make it onto the list but if Bill Gates Sr. did, then she surely meets the criteria. Wheelchair-bound, was said to be really frail and weak some years ago and hasn't been seen much lately. Overdue.

Raoni (b. 1932) : 4-5 or more hospitalizations since 2020 and turning 93 next year, Drol's immortal if I'm not mistaking. Famous enough, far too overlooked too, the kind of picks that I find personally interesting.

James Ivory (b. 1928) : A-list film director and screenwriter. If they are to drop Eastwood (which I suggest), him or Polanski could make great additions. Has been overlooked despite being one of the most awarded film director alive.

John Williams (b. 1932) : recent news suggest something is going on, would be a great inclusion at nearly 93.

and of course, the perennial overlooked ones : Leontyne Price, Frank Gehry, Kim Novak, Vera Miles, Amartya Sen, Isabel Peron, King Salman, Georges Soros…

don’t drop Prunella Scales, too risky now that Timothy’s gone, bring back Mike Ditka, Attenborough and Minelli and that’s it.

Michael Bolton update from Facebook, keeps you guessing a little:

TMZ article refers to Bolton's diagnosis as brain cancer, but when reading the article, it just repeats old information.

Harrison Ford for a speculative. You never know. 82 and counting. Mind you that means nothing these days. Happy with family etc. No known medical issues.  Sorry,  just argued myself out of that choice. Back to Charles and Biden.

Harrison Ford looks to be in great shape I mean he could always cradh his plane but not a good enough reason to pick him IMHO.Bruce Willis is the obvious action hero inclusion although im still thinking ot might be too soon.He was the hardest call on my DDP shortlist after Charles for the DDP ( not revealing my final decision yet suffice to say it was a tough call in both instances).

As you say Charles and Biden are better picks although Biden I can't help but think is a year or 2 too early for the list.Yes he is clearly senile but still mobile and his condition is clearly variable and he still clearly has ok days.Charles on the other hand is a good punt I think.Still undergoing cancer treatment after nearly a year coupled with the fact he won't say where it is still

I think Michael York should be considered. Was diagnosed with with amyloidosis in 2013 and is 83 in March. A solid, David Soul type pick.
