One of GUN's theme team climbers, Sajid Sadpara developed a life-threatening altitude sickness during the K2 ascent.

Major H. P. S. Ahluwalia, mountaineer, author, social worker, recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan reportedly dead at 85. He took part in the 1965 Indian Everest Expedition and during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 suffered a spine injury that left him wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life.

The team leader of that expedition is still alive, by the way. Mohan Singh Kohli, now 90.

Ed Webster, described as someone who pushed the limits when he climbed Mount Everest in 1988, has died. He was 66. Webster mentored numerous people over the years. Webster was also a writer and award-winning photographer whose work was featured in Rolling Stone and the New York Times.

The renowned Soviet mountaineer Lyudmila Agranovskaya died at the age of 90 in Kamchatka.

She made seven ascents above 7,000 metres, five of them as a leader. She was the first woman to climb the highest point of the Soviet Union, Peak Communism (1970), and also the first woman in the country to be awarded the badge "For climbing the highest peaks of the Union" ("Snow Leopard", badge number 16).

The Russian Geographical Society sent an expedition to the Indian Himalayas.

This task is altogether intriguing "the expedition will search for places where Allied warplanes fell in 1943-1945". 

Not mountaineers, but there will be some hard-to-reach places.

Ah yeah, that team was entirely composed of hard-core climbers active in the Himalayas in mid-winter. He scored fairly well as I recall
