George Melly

So - roll on the drums - will he make July?

Fancy a sweepstake - how many more current or former profesional wrestlers will Melly outlive :)

If he drags on too long, I'm dressing up as trout and getting in his bed...

Post a picture when you do Hack, it'll win you post of the year, obviously.

Dunno HCW, given the searing honesty of the younger Melly's contributions to the Wiki discussions I'd say not. I think it may be more to do with the notorious unpredictability of that bit between terminal diagnosis and death rattle, kinda why we're all here eh? More likely our man Melly will take his final bow in the near future than not, I reckon. I say he makes July, but isn't greatly bothered by the decision about whether to watch anything about American independence day celebrations. Just guessin' like.

His Wiki has been updated with date of death by "tomandlu" so I'd say most probably correct. Rest In Peace Mr. Melly, you were great entertainment the times I saw you.

One of those bittersweet DL days. Let's hope the two trout made it for the last rites.

(DL googlewatch = 7th for 'George Melly', 1st for 'George Melly death/dead'. Expect increased traffic but few ranters)

Sad but not unexpected.

Read the mini obit on the beeb and was surprised to find he enjoyed fishing. I had him down as a poker man myself.

S'cuse the pedantry but is there a report confirming the date of death, Wiki says today but anyone could have placed that 'fact' there. Only matters cos I'd predicted he'd make this month but not be greatly troubled celebrating American independence day, my guess being he'd die on or before yesterday. No money riding on it or owt. But pride in the office.

At Our Service!

I'm leaving my say this time with Not a Potato's Deadly Pool interpretation of the Jazz player.

'Jazz and blues singer Melly is what you get when you combine Hot Jazz with surrealist art and bisexuality. Lung cancer is what you get when you are George Melly.

Were rolling with three.

Looks like his son was not far wrong with his wiki post.

George Melly is the 3rd hit of 2007.

He is the 153th DL hit since 1987.

The 2007 list is now in 16th place shared with 1989 and 1990 out of a possible 21 lists.

I'm off to check the football forum's deadpool - see if they had him.

A poem for George:

There was an old swinger called Melly,

Who wore a big hat on the telly,

A wide lapelled suit,

With a striped shirt to boot,

And an eye-patch as big as his belly.

Godot

Godot

For Melly's rhythm and spark we should thank,

Right from his youth to his end as a crank,

He was unconventional, there is no doubt,

With trousers down, fist clenched and a trout,

But was it a fisherman's tale or just a cheap wank.

Okay, Godot wins.

;) George. Always entertaining, and improved, in his own unique way, many people's lives. As much as this day was expected, especially recently, it is still a sad day.

Though from a DDP point of view, I did need another hit after being scoreless since March...

There was a lovely old guy called George

On all of life's excesses he continued to gorge

Cancer, dementia and emphysema too

How he got this far we haven't a clue

But early this morning at 2.37

George left this earth and went up to heaven

Goodbye Mr Melly and thanks for the memories

Hope you have a pleasant trip to the cemetry.

Okay, Godot wins. Still.

First WDP hit for me - it was unique which is surprising considering I picked him when it

was clear he wasn't long for this world, 3 months after not selecting him in my 'shadow' Deathlist(Bandwagon jumper that I am!)....

So long George, one of the great aesthetes.... ;)
