maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted August 12, 2022 Hmmm So, I feel sure we've that this discussion somewhere hereabouts over the last few years but, if he doesn't make it... Just work with me on this. Ten years of varying safe houses in the UK back when the fatwa was fairly new means within a year of pegging out he'll likely break the all time record in the UK for blue plaques on places he once lived in! 1
Genfærd 452 Posted August 12, 2022 Still undergoing surgery. Which means he must be in a very critical condition (obviously). Suspect has been identified as a 24 year old male from New Jersey. He used an event pass to access the area and jumped on stage, stabbing Rushdie in the neck at least once and in the abdomen at least once. Have a feeling that he is a goner soon.
the_engineer 1,415 Posted August 12, 2022 Unfortunately a vocal minority of so called liberals, hated Rushdie and I've seen people say he's a racist and islamophobe. He's Indian born and converted from Islam to atheism. He has every right to be critical of something he lived and breathed. The stereotype that is loved by Islamic extremists and that is parroted by a large chunk of the left is only far right racist Tommy Robinson types criticise Islam, it's blown out the water by an Asian ex Muslim like Rushdie. It sets a precedent now ,if Islam can't be challenged and is beyond reproach and those who dare question it are met with violence now ,imagine what'll happen when it becomes more and more of a dominant force in society. Christian, atheist, gay , feminist, free speech advocates, those who appreciate religious freedom, socialists, conservatives will all be equal in an Islamist society equal in their inequality and oppression. It's not racist/fascist to critique Islam. 3 2

Or so badly injured complete recovery might be a mission beyond a 75 year old.

My first thought was that the news he's still in surgery is bad news, but then I considered that actually it might be good news: surely if he was at death's door then they wouldn't be able to spend hours performing surgery, he'd have bled out by now. Suggests the wounds can be fixed: what damage has been done in the meantime is another matter however.

Youth in Asia 1,086 Posted August 12, 2022 Rushdie was rushed to a ventilator with severed nerves in one arm and damage to his liver and the outlook grim for one of his eyes, according to his agent. 'The news is not good,' agent Andrew Wylie said in a written statement. 'Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged' 1

Having that level of trauma to your body at any age, much less 75, can be hard to overcome mentally. Imagining all he has to go through from this point forward....might be more merciful if he goes sooner rather than later.

I'm not a conservative voter ( hate the Tories see the Boris Johnson thread) infact I don't vote at all and never will again, I won't even register. I don't vote to give power over my life to other men and women, to pass laws and acts on how my life should be run. That legitimatises the corrupt system and you can't win a rigged game unless you stop playing and walk away, and voting is a rigged game especially when both sides are controlled by the same business interests and people.

Youth in Asia 1,086 Posted August 13, 2022 It's notable that the statements from the Muslim organizations are along the lines of - no person deserves to be attacked like that, rather than any positive comments or even any comments at all about Rushdie himself. They're scared of being next.
