drol 11,938 Posted October 14, 2016 October 14th. And don't forget to congratulate the winner of our sweepstakes, who was one day off of the correct date. After all you are a nice guy, Joey, while Bhumibol was nasty because he could hang on for some hours more, after exasperating us for years.

Btw. he was a PM from 1980 until 1988 (that is a fairly long period in my book) and his obit chances are further boosted by his regency (especially, if Vajiralongkorn's ascendancy meets some opposition and if his coronation is delayed). Now Mr Prem Tinsulanonda seems more obitable than ever, BBC reports that the new king's coronation will be delayed for a whole year (until the end of a one-year mourning period). Until then, Prem Tinsulanonda is expected to remain regent, which at the age of 96 might be an exhausting experience. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-37670834 This was announced by the Prime Minister (Gen Prayuth Chan-o-cha, 62), which suggests that it might not have been entirely the new king's own decision. maryportfuncity 10,645 Posted October 16, 2016 Speaking of the succession - read an interesting piece in the Sunday Times today which discusses the crown prince's love of fast cars, women much younger than himself and poodles. He's also prone to dressing like a young clubber when out and about near his German mansion. Our kinda guy, though let's let the job kill the obitable regent first eh?

Deathray 2,940 Posted October 20, 2016 A reign of seven decades is not like any other span in the world. It's a bizarre subject. Erm, he's the 17th longest reigning monarch in history, so it's quite like a few other spans. It's not like most other spans in the word though.

Bibliogryphon 9,571 Posted May 5, 2017 I am currently in Thailand and I am surprised and impressed at how seriously the whole nation takes the mourning of the late king. In the hotel I am staying in there is a shrine to him, there was one in the factory I visited today and there are billboards by the side of the road, and giant TV screens at the airport all carrying sombre pictures of him. The factory I am auditing at with a colleague who was here last year and she said everyone in the factory wore lime green corporate polo shirts but when they met us at the airport yesterday the factory rep was wearing a black corporate polo shirt. She explained that the parent company have replaced the entire workforce's polo shirts for the whole period of mourning (however they have also just changed the company name so it might be a good excuse to get rid of all the one with the old name on). I was going to take a picture of the shrine in the hotel but didn't want to seem disrespectful. When the Queen goes we will have a fortnight of wall to wall news coverage, paperboys will have to knock on the door to devliver the Mail on Sunday because of the sheer weight of colour supplements and then about a month after the funeral the Daily Mirror will run the first Queen was a bit cross and hated (............. ) (insert name of relative or public figure here) hatchet job and then we will all get a bit jolly about the impending coronation. If Theresa May does win in June she might want to think about this cycle of national 'coming together' and schedule it in for maybe early 2021.
