So they say Jon Hassell's medical emergency was breaking his leg:

Curious though why his GoFundMe says that "regaining his weight" is a top priority.

Awww, very sad (but not that unexpected). A highly original voice has gone. Some of his stuff takes getting used to, some of it is just absolutely beautiful. I'll listen to him today and in the coming days, a lot.

Louis Andriessen has Alzheimer's and vascular dementia: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nu.nl/muziek/6094441/componist-louis-andriessen-81-lijdt-aan-dementie.amp (in Dutch) . He finished his last piece last year, but entered a care facility in march this year. In interviews from 2 years ago he sounded extremely lucid and erudite, so I guess his decline is pretty fast paced.

Indeed, Louis Andriessen has now died at 82, half a year later:

Overweight ancient Finnish composers that I'm not sure will receive an international obit but if any one of these ever happens to die, it'll be front page news in Finland

Leif Segerstam (1944-2024) Youngest of this group and recently lost a lot of weight. His heart won't probably last forever having been the same size as George R. R. Martin. The Guardian once made an article about him.

Kaj Chydenius (1939-2024) Not in the best health according to himself but keeps working.

Jorma Panula (b. 1930) Sexist old guy who thinks conducting some types of music isn't "suitable for women", chief conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in the 60s and the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra in the 60s and the 70s. Got the Rolf Schock prize in Musical Arts in the 90s.

Panula's daughter Anu Panula, also active in the same areas as Jorma has died aged 64.

A suprise, as Anu didn't have any diseases that the media knew of. Her husband Hannu Kahiluoto however has had alzheimer's since atleast 2017. Anu's mother died in 2005.
