In answer to your question, no, it wouldn't be common knowledge imo, but it's the kind of snippet one picks up while looking up random stuff on the net. For example, I was aware that the Holly in WotWS was based on a real person, although I didn't recall the details. I may have read it on Songfacts, which is a site I occasionally visit when a song attracts my interest, and I usually end up looking at more stuff than I went there for, as you do. I stand by the baseball players and college presidents comment though. America's a big place and there are so fucking many of them.
