To be fair, the culture of the west was impacted to the core by Hef. He made sex much less taboo and sexualized the culture of today. Whether you liked it or not, Hefner had a helluva impact.

Maybe you disagree, but Hefner was more important to me than a boxer or wrestler I had no idea existed until I joined the forums.

He also fought for women's right for birth control and campaigned for LGBT rights in the FREAKING SIXTIES, long before it was cool to do so.

Seriously?  You are affected personally by the death of Hugh Hefner?  It impacts you to the core?  Did you cry lots of tears?
You're making a hell of a case for the person who waxed poetic about Chester Bennington.

SC

I can honestly say that I definitely shed some sort of salty discharge in his honor.

Charles Manson is definitely going this month so

November: Manson or Malcolm Young maybe?

October: Tom Petty

November: Malcolm Young (Totò Riina in (southern) Italy)

About Charles Manson I usually trust TMZ as it is a reliable and extremely well informed source. But no official statement about his health was released and if the situation was so grave as announced by TMZ he would be already dead. In January all newspapers published headlines claiming Manson was near death and then he came back to jail as nothing happened. Hopefully this time he won't go back.

I haven't given much away about my list for this one to be posted in January, but I will say in world terms and of significance Manson's death will easily outstrip anyone this month.

I've already updated my list.

I hold my hands up and admit I don't 'get' this thread.

For most of the names quoted, I can't see how their deaths are significant outside of their family & friends. There are exceptions, e.g. Michael Jackson, was still performing when he died.

Perhaps someone (YW, FB) can tell me how Manson dying is significant - there's a few disciples plannig to carry on his legacy just waiting for this occasion, I can't see the significance.

As for Keith Barron (BufordTJ), hasn't appeared in anything for 3 years, hasn't even been on Countdown for 7 years! How is his death significant?

Tbh, is this thread significant? :D

Obviously it's poolers' personal opinion on who was the most significant death. I base mine on significance by using these criteria:

(1) World famous (preferably British);

(2) Their loss to a specific field or specialism, or alternatively

(3) Their contribution on a worldwide scale to something, whether famous or infamous.

Therefore it's not necessarily the death itself that is significant, it is the person. Manson's crimes and his subsequent notoriety, his control over other people, should have shocked the world into never ever allowing someone like that to get as far as he did. Sadly, still the world hasn't learned it's lesson, but generations to come will still learn of this creature and hopefully resolve to prevent things like this happening again.

If I ever post in here, it's just folk I personally liked. I don't give a toss what the rest of the world thought about significance, hence Michael Bond being a bigger loss this year than Tom Petty or Jerry Lewis, imo of course.

Yep, you are most likely correct. December: King Michael of Romania (Unless a big name pops up between now and New Years Eve!)

How is King Michael significant to you?  He meant nothing to you.
I know....been through this discussion upthread.  Sorry.  Just boggles my mind.  The rest of yours all make perfect sense.  In fact all your honourable mentions all make sense but for December as well.  Take your pills.

I feel that the "they meant nothing to you" argument is kind of invalid, cause most of the time only one's relatives and maybe a few select entertainers could qualify for this (personal) distinction.

Michael's significance might stem from being a minor historic figure and his longevity (being one of the last surviving WW2 figures and Elizabeth II's senior on account of his age), and while he would mean nothing to me personally, I think his inclusion in the DL was justified and couldn't find anyone on Wikipedia's monthly list ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaths_in_December_2017 ) that would stand out as obviously more significant than him.
