Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Richard Skutt died Monday.  Skutt, who handled criminal cases for the Third Judicial Circuit of Michigan, collapsed in the courthouse Monday at lunch time and later died.

(NY) State Supreme Court Justice Elma Bellini died Sunday. She was 63 years old.  Justice Bellini was elected to her current position in the 7th Judicial District in 2009. She had been an acting Supreme Court justice, appointed by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman, from 2004 to 2008.  Her term was to end in 2022.

U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Stephen Reinhardt, long regarded as one of the nation's most liberal appellate court jurists, died in Los Angeles today of a heart attack at age 87.

 

For those who need a U.S. legal primer, we have state legal systems and the federal legal system (we also have separate laws, though many states have adopted  the language of federal laws such as the 14th Amendment).  Our federal system has two courts in each state (usually an Eastern and Western District Court) and then 12 Courts of Appeals, each one representing the interestest of usually 4-5 states.  Next step is the U.S.Supreme Court.  And make no mistake, not all federal courts of appeals are equal....ones containing California or New York carry more clout than Montana and Mississippi.  So....this judge, being on the 9th (Fed) Ct of App in California was rather important in the matter of U.S. jurisprudence.

Judge Patricia Gifford Butsch has died.  The Marion County (IN) Superior Court judge known for her even-handed leadership during Mike Tyson's rape trial in Indianapolis has died. She passed away April 8 at the age of 79, after a massive hemorrhagic stroke in Fort Myers, Fla., where she spent the winter months after retirement.

Stephen J. McEwen Jr., the former president judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court and a two-term district attorney of Delaware County, has died at the age of 85.

McEwen, who was appointed to the appeals court bench in 1981 by then-Gov. Dick Thornburgh and later elected to a 10-year term, died after a “brief illness.”

Germany's Justice Ministry says former chief federal prosecutor Harald Range, who was fired in 2015 over a controversial investigation into two journalists, has died at age 70.  The ministry confirmed media reports Thursday that Range died of a heart attack while out at a cafe in Karlsruhe on Wednesday evening.

Then-Justice Minister Heiko Maas, now Germany's foreign minister, dismissed Range over his decision to open an investigation into two journalists from the website Netzpolitik.org who had reported that Germany's domestic spy agency planned to expand surveillance of online communication.  The treason probe, later dropped, was widely criticized and regarded as an embarrassment to the government, which was forced to defend Germany's commitment to protecting press freedom.

Diana E. Murphy, the first woman appointed to the bench of the Eighth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the only woman to serve on that bench for 19 years, died late Wednesday afternoon at her home in Minneapolis. She was 84.

She planned to fully retire effective in July. She suffered from long-term health problems, including heart and rheumatoid arthritis, her family said Wednesday night.

If Trump nominates another 40-something-year-old conservative, that doesn't have any extreme positions that would cause Collins and Murkowski to flip in the Senate confirmation vote, the court will be a 5-4 party line rubber stamp for Trump's GOP. Clarence Thomas isn't even 70 yet, it'll be decades before another conservative Justice retires or passes away. 

Now, more than ever, women's health is in deep jeopardy. Roe V. Wade will be gone by June 2019 if a Trumpist is confirmed. 

If this terrifies you, please email, call, and talk with Senators Lisa Murkowski, John McCain. Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, Susan Collins, and John Neely Kennedy, because once this nominee is confirmed, there's no going back, especially since Breyer and Ginsburg are aging and Trump has shots to replace them with conservatives.
