There were some croaky, ancient voices audible on last night's R4 documentary about Richard Dimbleby.

Jeremy Isaacs in particular seems suddenly very old, Michael Peacock (former BBC2 controller) sounded like he had a death rattle and several other obit worthy old codgers chipped in.

I didn't know Michael Peacock was still alive!

He and Sir Paul Fox appeared as talking heads on The Battle for Saturday Night. Aged but lucid iirc.

OK even the death of Tom Clancy is not enough to break the boredom and so I present another list.

This time it is presenters of WatO (or The World at One for those peasents who don't listen to Radio 4.

For a programme that began in 1965 it only has six surviving main presenters

William Davis (b.1933)

Brian Widlake (?)

David Jessell (?)

James Naughie (b.1951)

Martha Kearney (b 1957)

Shaun Ley (b.1969)

All would expect a BBC obit but surprised I couldn't find more detail on Jessell.

Brian Widlake has died: https://twitter.com/BBCWiltshire/status/815897545062961152?lang=en

An intersting Last Word special on R4 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b085z34d

This week Last Word departs slightly from its usual format, when Matthew Bannister and the BBC obituary editor Nick Serpell return to the beginning of 2016 and recall a time when obituarists were in huge demand. Together they discuss the challenges and processes involved in commemorating so many big names in so short a time

Steve Hewlett gave an interview today on Radio 4 pm show that was trending on twitter where I understand he revealed his prognosis has worsened significantly and he's now taken steps towards planning his funeral.

Sad news

Sad news

Aye, and he married his partner.

But he's Deathlist Cup material at best. MMDP seems ambitious in the current situation

He's on a whole bunch of the DDP contenders teams.

Thank goodness a Scottish team didn't think "he sounds optimistic, on the list of immunotherapy, 2018 here we come" and not pick him this yea...oh.

Literally on the team right to the moment I was going to press "send", then swapped out on a gut feeling whim for Al-Baghdadi. Still, these things happen, and it might yet prove a good decision...

BBC link - "weeks, maybe months" but he didn't exactly hang around with the wedding

Link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-38887862

Interestingly the wedding took place in the hospital and immediately - would suggest days, maybe weeks rather than the optimism displayed in this report....

He said he had liver failure and that his liver is so damaged it cant tolerate morphine very well.My guess is the nurse said weeks or months to not completely crush him.

Was about five minutes late coming back to mine and tuning into his regular interview with Eddie Mair and I knew straight away he was gone because his voice was clear again.I knew it must have been a compilation of previous interviews.
