the_engineer 1,415 Posted May 8, 2015 Labour are done . How could they ever get a majority without Scottish seats? Amazing the amount of big names gone certainly the most memorable election of my lifetime. Ed balls might be the last big name to go!! Lib Dems also won't have any seats left in 2020 they only held on to 9 seats due to huge majorities and have dropped in some of them over 20% , their leads being less than 10% in those seats.

rockhopper penguin 2,265 Posted May 8, 2015 In a reverse of the way everyone over 60 in Liverpool says they went to school with John Lennon, we'll now find that no one will admit that they voted for the Tories.
gcreptile 10,979 Posted May 8, 2015 This result for the Tories is a bit like the Derek Bentley case. They pull the trigger their accomplice gets hanged. Happened in Germany as well in 2013. Our liberal party (the FDP) failed to clear the 5% threshhold and was kicked out of parliament while being the coalition partner of Merkel's CDU who gained massively. However the CDU missed the absolute seat majority and were forced into a major coalition with the social democrats who could actually form a government of their own with the Greens and the Socialists if only they really wanted it. Another parallel in ideological terms is that your UKIP is our AfD whose surge might have caused the drop of the FDP below the threshhold. In 2009, the SPD was also in a coalition with Merkel and lost heavily. Merkel has the unusual talent to spell death to her allies. Sometimes she gets called "a black widow" for that.
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted May 8, 2015 That was unexpected. Of course, LibDem's fate was sealed when they joined the coalition. It reminds me of an ideologically related Dutch party, D'66, a party that ordinarily gets good election results after opposition on a leftish ticket, join a right-wing coalition as a junior party and get thrashed at the next election. This table demonstrates this point well. I suppose it's a problem of European liberalism: they like socially progressive programs, but their economic instincts are conservative and those instincts win when government positions beckon. Large conservative parties are happy to sweep up their seats in parliament and throw them a bone in the form a few promises they don't intend to keep and rarely do. Their leftish voters will of course switch party in disgust at the next election. Essentially, LibDem got what they deserved. It seems to me Labour paid the price for being rather careless in the campaign. I have the impression that they expected to sweep up the disaffected LibDem voters easily. They did to some extent, but I think the Tories got a fair share as well. Also I think they underestimated the amount of Labour votes that went to UKIP. They should have known that fascists appeal most to voters with little education, the same pond Labour is fishing in. I don't understand what happened in Scotland. The Netherlands don't have a similar situation. SNP's victory is stunning. The Tories played their cards well. There's little more I can say about their result. The difference between the polls before the election and the outcome is a bit puzzling. Did the pollsters screw up? Did many people say one thing and decide to vote Tory in the polling station? Both? UK politics will certainly be interesting in the coming years. Once the shine wears off, mr Cameron may find his job a lot less attractive than it looks now. I'll give the consequences of the electoral system some thought and comment after the results are complete.
YoungWillz 21,066 Posted May 8, 2015 Whilst I'm over excited and over tired, if Labour had been a little more radical, been prepared to admit their failings in the past and been willing to talk to the SNP (a message which seemed to resonate with folks over the UK, but only we had the opportunity to vote for it), perhaps they might have stood a chance. When people were faced with two similar looking parties agreed on most things, why change? Cameron won't find it so easy regarding Scotland, I understand a large number of his backbenchers are against more powers. He'll become the squeezed middle PM. Phantom 2,535 Posted May 8, 2015 Well Labour held my constituency of Tooting which has been a safe seat for them since the constituency was created in 1974. Although the end result of the Tories retaining power wasn't what I would like to have had happen.
Rotten Ali 600 Posted May 8, 2015 Happy that my choice of MP was returned (Vernon Coaker, Labour, shadow defence sec, Gedling) but not in the overall result. Likewise, upset that locals Anna (too posh to debate) Soubry, Nigel (Candy Crush) Mills and Mark (farm shop) Spencer were returned. I'm thinking there was some dodgy counting or handling of votes. No way should that nasty woman have got back in.
maryportfuncity 10,657 Posted May 8, 2015 Struggling to see the current situation as a positive, except that there's a whole generation of WW2 heroes heading hopelessly towards a care system that'll be demolished in five years. If their dementia addled minds leave them thinking they're back in childhood the 1930s feel of 21st century British healthcare will confirm that assumption, or summat. They'll feel at home, a few dead pool points will be snagged for those who call the right candidates.

YoungWillz 21,066 Posted May 8, 2015 As Culture Secretary, I'd bring in work suitability assessments. Anyone not up to scratch by my Government Guidelines (which would be amazingly harsh of course) would be debarred from working in film, TV, on radio or in the theatre. They would also lose any state benefits paid whilst "resting". Appearances on any type of reality or talent show would be met with the death penalty. Handsome redheads might be treated more leniently, provided they succumbed to a private interview with me. The Press would be treated differently. There would be a presumption of guilt when accused of any wrongdoing. Rebekah Brooks and Katie Hopkins would require to face the guillotine, in public, but only after the population of Manchester had taken a dump in their open mouths. In other words, I'm a total public hero.
charon 4,943 Posted May 8, 2015 As transport zsar, I would ground all planes immediately. Including war shit. Save the planet, stop imi emi gration etc. Tried to fire up tune in radio for 5live there, and a prick called nick Abbott is on. All about "why do the Scots gets 58 seats? They polled half of ukips votes, and are nothing to do with London!! " What a cock. How about 2 countries getting equal seats in a Union then ya dick? And a couple of votes to the principality and the failed statelet... But 200 seats Scotland and 200 seats en@land, now that's equality.

Deathray 2,941 Posted May 8, 2015 You've probably heard the arguments everywhere else today from the other seven million people who voted for one of the "fourth" parties in this election and have been greeted with 10 seats whilst the SNP have got 1.4m votes and achieved 56 seats, but it's now time for electoral reform of the proper type (not Alternative Vote) to be put on the table in readiness for 2015. And I'm not advocating this because my party only got one seat, I was advocating it before the election as my posting history will bare out. Cameron's government is illegitimate given the shortcomings of our democratic system. Yes, he earned the right to be largest party but similarly to Blair in 2005 he is absolutely devoid of any right to his parliamentary majority whatsoever. 650 of 650 declared and the electorate's been royally fucked once again, five more years of the fucking Tories - who are already preparing to pass the snoopers charter and look for their welfare savings from a scheme that helps the disabled find work. Although on the bright side they will finally give us an EU referendum.

Dr. Zorders 1,271 Posted May 9, 2015 They don't need to be snooping on us.... they need to be snooping on who's coming off those fucking Mediterranean boats the dumb fucks. It's Jihadi Central out there. But at least thanks to Ed's cunt-tacular failing we won't be getting that fucking "Islamophobia" law oooh I bet they'll smack his arse until it's no-longer-red down at the next Fabian society meeting, for that In other news this is my first experience under a full-blooded Tory government while having pubes. I feel oddly uncomfortable with Cameron in full charge I have to admit, but there's other things I'm glad Clegg won't be influencing on. With the coalition it was always the worst of both worlds..... As Chancellor I would cut death duty...;-) lololol.... Really surprised to see you "up and about" and joking.... (not trying to rub it in, jus' sayin. You and half the userbase actually) When that exit poll came out that's the biggest sudden "hush" I can remember from a crowd since when wrestler Owen Hart plunged from the rafters back in '99. On the plus side I wonder if the shock of the tory victory might finally kill off Denis Healey... we badly need a 3rd hit to cheer us all up ! I thought the same thing. That's the spirit! Rotten Ali 600 Posted May 9, 2015 As Foreign Secretary, thank you very much, I'll be spending the weekend at Dorney Wood House, big box of cleaning items and a checklist / jobs list of items that need to be done before we turn it into a timeshare pad for "country pile" lottery prize winners. (£2 entry a ticket). Anyway, down to business. Fix trip to Washington DC, usual stuff, discuss geo-world politics and First World Nation's increased involvement in nation building in war torn areas and underdeveloped countries. Plus explore plan to join UK to USA with mega-project floating high speed Maglev train to end transatlantic air travel. On to New York, m/t at the UN, meet with Secretary General and propose that new body be formed to bottom out all previously disputed UN security orders and find harmonious solutions to ongoing problems in the world. On return have m/t with defence sec and PM to understand route to progress what needs to be done in securing Great Britain's place in the World. Quick visit to Gibraltar. Then off on a tour of European capitals, Lisbon (discuss plan to extend that Maglev line down to there), Madrid (bash heads about their links with Argentina and the Argies sabre rattling), Paris (Reform of Interpol. Talk about co-efforts on Nuclear energy. And request sharing French design of launcher tubes and delivery systems), Rome (usual anti Mafia stuff, prob African immigration issues), Athens (debt issues and as part of the UK's help package we will purchase an uninhabited island from them), Vienna (however find out if any of their government ski and get out on the Kaprun Glacier to conduct Anglo-Austrian business on the slopes). Berlin (deep drive on EU progress. Firmation on budget and 1st world issues) Copehagen (don't talk with the Danes enough) finish in Oslo talks about them joining the EU and their peace keeping plans round the world going forward with more joint efforts. Trip to Dublin with the PM. Talks about reworking the Borderline to better catter for "local issues". Fix trips to Moscow, Tokyo, Beijing, plus 6 nation Asia tour, Canberra and Auckland. Then Pretoria and Harare to help ZANU transition its leadership securely. Gulf nations trip to discuss idea for UK to join OPEC. Pre Olympic trip to Rio with handover teams. Trade talks piggy backed on any meeting of Pan American Nations, der-de-der. Then push the boat out with a visit to Argentina and stand them down if they think they are too big for their boots. There is no point standing candidates when there is no realistic chance that they will win. It's dumb. Maximum, the Labour Party should not stand in a seat if it's never held it before. Also they should have not stud in many of the seats held by the LibDems that were Tory targets, or in say about half a dozen seats that were Green and PC targets. And then just to mix it up, leave 3 seats alone that were the best UKIP targets. If there had been a 50/50 election pact between Labour and the SNP then that single Tory seat could also have been taken.
the_engineer 1,415 Posted May 9, 2015 Well as the Justice Minister and would remove the terrorism act of 2006 as its the closest thing we have to a patriot act in UK . I think its at 28 days but you just know the tories will try and get this increased and finish off labours erosion of civil liberties . Anyone could be listed as a terrorist and detained and not only that this act can just be extended and extended and extended . How long before its one year? How long before its extended to other crimes? The foundation has already be set. I would bring back the death penalty for a select number of horrific crimes , multiple murders , premeditated murder (murder of lee rigby) / murders , prolific rapists, child murders , torture murders , child abuse (similar to ian watkins or chris denning) and driving while using a mobile phone . A life sentence would mean a life sentence. Build more prisons and increase the by the number of years for crimes like burglary (make the burglars pay back though work or benefits the amount stolen from homes, business's etc) ,rape, ABH and for attacks were injuries are sustained and will stay with a person the rest of their lives. Crime is money and to have criminals sitting in prison doesn't make money , that's why they get out in half the time so solicitors , the police , insurance companies and everyone else inbetween get their cut . Especially now private firms in the UK are taking care of the rehabilitation. Also a complete ban on internet censorship or any censorship , No super injunctions etc.
