I’m sure her 5 listeners will be devastated.

Oh I'm sure she  has more than that!!!

I think the wider story is going to run and run potentially

Spotify has a lot of older listeners. My parents use a different music subscription service a lot.

Ooh!! Seems Joni Mitchell was far from alone yesterday in making moves to seperate themselves from Spotify . A lot of people tried to cancel their subscription apparently.

If BTS removed theirs then Spotify might get worried.

BTS's music is corporate owned and they're an overproduced pop group (I'm not saying they're bad, just that they're very specifically curated by the corporates behind them). They aren't going to do anything until the winds are blowing one way or another so strongly you can't ignore it.

The artist who will be interesting to watch is Taylor Swift. She owns all her new and re-recorded stuff, has a bit of a rabid fanbase, and has already fought a music streaming giant and won in the shape of iTunes/Apple.

With consideration to the scale and size of the modern day music industry and where the money is (largely hip hop), she’s a drop in the ocean. That was my point. I don’t dispute that boomers have some kind of strange love for her. Never rated her personally.

I only know a limited number of her songs but my parents and aunts and Uncles who of whom are boomers  are very familiar with her and most like her.

I honestly wouldn't know which genre of music is most financially lucrative but given the rapid expansion in podcasting I am wondering if long term that will  become spotifys main business rather than musical?

Podcasting seems to be a real expanding growth area  .Most individual  podcasts aren't as financially rewarding as Joe Rogans  but in future  I think big name podcasters  are going to be almost as famous as household names in television.

Yes there are some duds in podcasting like  the so called royal rebels Harry and Meghan  who seem to be a disappointment to Spotify  but on the whole the sector seems buoyant.

I wouldn't be at all surprised  if podcasts end up being Spotifys core  business rather than music eventually is what I am trying to say!!

Music seems most profitable  when it's live tours.

Despite any opinion  I may have on Joe Rogan  I am not principled  enough nor inclined to cancel my Spotify subscription :D

Other people are free to do as they wish that's the much lauded virtue consumer choice and  consumer power .

But myself ?I love podcasts  about politics and sex far too much!

I haven't got the patience to listen to podcasts.  I could read a transcript of it in a fraction of the time.  Same goes for all the videos on the BBC website - as soon as I click on an item and see it leads to a video or audio thing I move on.   Give me a couple of paragraphs to read instead.

As for Joni Mitchell, I cannot stand her shrill voice.  It's like a squeaky blackboard eraser.

What about  a podcast  mainly made up of dolphin  noises as part of a way of teaching you how to relax , mediate and ease your way into a state of blissful harmony?!

James Blunt is fucking awesome!!

No, I am not talking about his music, I'm talking about what a nice guy he is, warm, funny, intelligent and self effacing.

A genuine good guy.

He's very funny on Twitter.  People come at him with snarky comments and he destroys them with a few well-chosen words.

Going to be very difficult for Spotify to resolve this without causing a major split one way or another.

Yeah because Joni Mitchell and Neil Young are relevant in 2022.

Some of their songs are as relevant today as they were when they were written, if not more so.

I am guessing which year did Joni Mitchell appear on the Deathlist wasn't one of the questions?

I got two - and believe me, I only know Big Yellow Taxi.

Yeah, I'm not a delver into celebs unless I'm interested.

Exactly, the idea of paving paradise to put up a parking lot has really taken off over the years.
