Deathray 2,942 Posted September 8, 2016 Regarding bonus points a who the fuck are they deduction should be instituted for anyone tmib has to google - minus 15 points.
msc 18,570 Posted September 8, 2016 If my own need to google people was any reflection, that'd be the first DDP to be won on minus points.
Spade_Cooley 9,641 Posted September 8, 2016 Whether the Independent counts as an obit source now it no longer publishes in hard copy is one question that needs answering, although I'm going to guess that since it ceased publication there have been no cadavers that got a QO via the Indie but nowhere else. Bibliogryphon 9,656 Posted September 8, 2016 I always thought the QO requirement meant those that make risky picks do so at their own peril but are rewarded with unique picks. I like my picks famous not sick but I don't want to be prescriptive. We spend a lot of time discussing that type of pick anyway.

themaninblack 2,112 Posted September 19, 2016 Latest update...
themaninblack 2,112 Posted September 20, 2016 Bonus points for being in the drop 40 is a suggestion I will be making. I forgot my reasoning on this. I think it will be fair for everyone if this bonus points for drop 40 is accepting. Most of the top winners are choosing celebrities who are terminally ill, and while some will make it into the drop 40, people who want to compete to win but see terminally ill people they have never seen might make them feel a bit bad. With the inclusion of the drop 40 bonus points, if it happens of course, it might have some tighter competition. Sure, most of the top 30 would still be at top, but it might finally give some other people a better shot at winning. I've been thinking about having a Drop 40 bonus since the summer. It's time it had some significance to the game , rather than there as decoration. So I finally decided to have a go at the coding/database and did an experiment, adding Drop 40 to the HTA and altering the picks on the database (basically add Drop 40 picks as an extra column and making the necessary indication). And it only went and bloody worked, didn't it! However, I'm not going to over load the competition with bonuses, so I'm going to operate on a "one in-one out" basis and the prime candidate for deletion is the Unlucky 13 bonus. I think 3 points for a Drop 40 pick is good enough, which would be one more point than U13, but will affect more teams but conversely, a miniscule number of hits (1.26%!). An effect of this might be to encourage more mainstream picks but of course we wouldn't know who would be in the Drop 40 until it's revealed in January. It would be the ultimate blind auction!

msc 18,570 Posted September 20, 2016 I like the idea of subbing in a Drop 40 bonus for the Unlucky 13 bonus, because a Drop 40 bonus would have given me points this year, whereas the 13 bonus never has. Selfish but honest!

Selfish but honest! These days we should admire honesty even among the self-serving. If you get an unlucky 13 hit this year though I'm guessing you wouldn't be donating your points. Spade_Cooley 9,641 Posted September 20, 2016 Strategy implications of this switch won't be a wholescale switch from Hassan Asifs to Zsa Zsa Gabors, but rather when it comes to 60/40 picks it will be wiser to go with the more famous: Howard Marks rather than Paul Cox, for instance. CaptainChorizo 2,001 Posted September 20, 2016 The biggest loser of a change of the drop 40 would not be any players but Rev Billy Graham and his chances at the top drop 40 spot,as Zsa Zsa and Kirk Doulgas might fall off some peoples teams going from 5 to 4 point picks. Either way I like the twist as it adds another element of strategy where as the lucky 13 is just blind luck.
Death Impends 8,067 Posted September 21, 2016 I like the Drop 40 bonus idea - gives a clear boundary to qualify which is tough to do with a lot of the ideas for fame-based bonuses, which the Drop 40 sort of is in the sense of how usually about 35 of them feel like they could be DL names - and would be fine with 13 getting ditched given the more random element, even if I did benefit from it once with John McCabe. Switch 141 Posted September 21, 2016 I like this idea, the only possible drawback is that it will make reaching 100 points a lot easier. I would have been at 106 points now instead of 91. At least four more teams would also have broken 100 by now (didn't bother to check all of them), without taking into account the larger incidence of picks such as Muhammad Ali and Joao Havelange this would have (presumably) caused. msc 18,570 Posted September 21, 2016 To quote TMIB himself: It's the curious nature of deadpooling that a figure of Ali's stature and popularity should garner less points than an obscure indie musician when all it takes is a obit. But (and I'm dropping a big hint here) this could all change in 2017... The proposed rule change would give super famous folk like Ali 10 points instead of 7, so as many points as a Joey Feek, but it doesn't take those 10 points away from a Joey Feek. Theoretically a Martin Crowe could gain as many points as a joker as a Dr Mark Sims. Having time to think over it, I like it. It wouldn't change anything this year at the top, but you can't really look at things that way.
