Godot 149 Posted January 10, 2006 Ah, Cohen, wondered when someone would mention him. He seems to go on and on and on, have his latest CD, very good except his voice is deepening and slowing to such an extent it's like playing a single at 33 rpm. Great for black dog days. He has a thing about the word "naked" that I don't quite understand. Anyway not for a while I wouldn't have thought. I'm sure Canadian Paul will have a view. Must go and play it again..... Phantom 2,550 Posted January 10, 2006 Godot, "Dear Heather" is a unusual album, Cohen's lyrics get stranger and stranger as the years pass by. I went to see him at the Royal Albert Hall back during his "I'm Your Man" tour. I think I was the youngest person there. His son Adam has some good stuff out. I quite like Adam's debut album. Well worth a listen
Godot 149 Posted January 10, 2006 Am listening to Dear Heather now. Sounds like it could become a family tradition like the Buckleys (Jeff and Tim). Mind the Buckleys had a family tradition of untimely deaths.
Phantom 2,550 Posted January 10, 2006 I loved Cohen's interview & radio phone-in on BBC Radio 2 about 15 years ago, when a listener called in and asked him why his songs were so depressing.. Cohen replied that it wasn't his songs, it was his voice

I've always thought that Cohen's slowing down was more of a personal choice than a health issue. He'll be around for a while I think, something that I'm rather ambivilent about. Gordon Lightfoot is the Canadian balladeer that you want to keep your eyes on... he's gone through a spell of health troubles lately, serious ones at that. maryportfuncity 10,684 Posted January 10, 2006 Cohen has no choice BUT to be around. His manager swindled him out of about five million quid forcing laughing Lennie into a comeback at the age of 70. It's enough to make you depressed! On a separate note VINEGER TITS if you're lookin' in does your grasp of German rock extend to a detailed of the incident below. I've heard various accounts, some of which suggest it never happened. I'm inclined to believe it did. Gunther Dietz - Died 8 or 9-?-1997 ( Heavy Metal ) He dove off the stage during a concert, the crowd moved away and he smashed onto the concrete floor. Rotten Ali 600 Posted September 19, 2009 Cut and Paste from the BBC: Singer Leonard Cohen is recovering after collapsing on stage in Spain, a spokesman for his music company has said. The 74-year-old became ill during a concert in Valencia and was taken to hospital as a precaution. He has now been discharged and is said to have had food poisoning. Cohen was in the middle of singing his Bird On The Wire song in Valencia when he fainted, prompting the band to stop playing and rush to help him. The Canadian singer was treated first by stadium medical staff and then taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He was given the all-clear in the early hours of Saturday. A band member told the crowd Cohen had suffered stomach cramps and vomiting fits. His concert organisers say the final date of the Spanish tour will go ahead in Barcelona on Monday. After Spain, Cohen is due to perform in Florida on 17 October. The legendary artist resumed touring last year after a lengthy break.

(It's during the last 10 seconds of the video, for those who don't want to be entertained by a quite lovely version of "Bird On A Wire" as a prelude to a fall.) Weebl 216 Posted October 12, 2016 (edited) Searched for a thread about the Godfather of Gloom himself, but didn't find one despite many mentions in threads on the forum. As he's 82 now I think he's overdue for getting his own thread. I was inspired to make the thread following reading this report: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/oct/12/leonard-cohen-i-am-ready-to-die This article links to another TL;DR interview in the New Yorker: http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/10/17/leonard-cohen-makes-it-darker He does have a new album out soon, but by the sounds of things his health has declined considerably - he was touring as recently as 2013 but the article says that he'll never tour again as he is understandably too old. Edited October 12, 2016 by DevonDeathTrip I've merged a few previous posts about Leonard Cohen in to this thread.

Would you like to bet on him being alive five years from now? I wouldn't.
Lord Fellatio Nelson 6,226 Posted October 12, 2016 I reckon this thread needs a bit more of an edge. Maybe something like a 'George v Leonard' 'Which one will go first? That kinda thing. If George seems to be the mega favourite then, surely, there are zillions of Cohens around the Globe and some MUST be famous enough to challenge Len, eh? Spade_Cooley 9,630 Posted October 12, 2016 Could the title be snatched by Stanley Cohen (Nobel laureate biochemist) born 1922, or Al Cohen (American magician) born 1926? Eight days too late for Elaine Lustig Cohen though.
msc 18,536 Posted October 12, 2016 I was thinking of the sociologist there, he's long dead. Wikipedia gives us 6 different Stanley Cohens, who knew it was such a popular name.

rockhopper penguin 2,265 Posted October 12, 2016 I remember seeing him at the Manchester Apollo in the early 80's. Despite his morose songs he has a wicked sense of humour and we were laughing all through the gig. I'd like to see him last more than 5 years but even if he doesn't the pun potential is massive. gcreptile 11,073 Posted October 12, 2016 There's also a very obitable Andy Cohen around. I think Leonard will last a couple of years longer. I do not see him reach 90, for some reason. Dying at 86 or so sounds about right.
