Sir Creep 7,070 Posted July 3, 2023 Neal Aaron Rogin, Chicago-born award winning writer, humorist and self-styled social observer, died Friday, June 16, in Ajijic, Mexico, after suffering a stroke. He was 81. He played a key role in the landmark LIVE AID Concert as head writer and associate producer of the global radio feed, writing the iconic tag line: "LIVE AID: Coming together to end hunger. Because now that we can we MUST." LIVE AID raised well over $100 million for African famine relief. SC

Looks like Squid's Stiffs had some inside info on him to pick him. (Not eligible for my TOTP team anyway).

I did think about having a crack at this but it's a bit of a herculean task so unlikely it'll progress at my end. If anyone does fancy it then this site is really handy for the inevitable questions along the lines of "who are all those people playing with The Style Council who aren't Talbot, Weller and Dee C Lee?" http://liveaid.free.fr/pages/liveaidtimesdetaileduk.html
YoungWillz 21,050 Posted November 13 They are bringing Do They Know It's Christmas? back. A remix of all three previous versions is to be released. Not sure the purpose of this, however, it does remind us all that this thread only caters for the original (and the OP is out of date @ebless!).

They need to let this die. It wasn't a good song then, it's even worse now. It makes me grit my teeth and cringe when I hear it as it has "white saviour" written all over it. "Do they know it's Christmas time at all?" Well probably mate, they're malnourished, not thick. It's even more out of touch when you consider many of the people from the affected regions were Muslims or had traditional tribal beliefs.

Certainly I had blanked out the 1989 version - until compiling my TOTP theme team list for next year. As I said, I don't see the purpose of this except perhaps doing an anniversary. There are great Christmas songs, there are very poor Christmas songs - the joy of the UK Charts over the decades. I'd call this a middling song. I detest Last Christmas with a vengeance - I despised it on its release and still do to this day. Oh and most stuff from Cliff.

Someone else will need to take over the list, and I already have too many that I'm maintaining so I nominate someone else do it. From the original list, I can see only one update? That's the death of Dennis Taylor from Kool & the Gang. I can't see Marilyn (wiki) making old bones. 62 now, last made an appearance in a 2021 documentary. Was a serious heroin addict from the mid-80s to the mid-2000s, and quite frankly it's miraculous he's still alive. One to watch.

If you scroll through Marilyn's recent Twitter/X feed, he's having a tough old time adjusting to his mother's death. Mentions of medication and the like. Of course, the DDP have previously named him as Peter Robinson, which is just confusing to me, but hey.

This was the most effective line in the song. It hit home because deep down people were thankful it wasn't them. And it forced us to admit it. Bono delivered it perfectly. It's not patronising, it's almost accusatory. This was the line that had us emptying our wallets. It was brilliant.
Youth in Asia 1,087 Posted November 13 It was actually a brilliant song, lyrics, tune and performance. Whether it was better than We are the world is an interesting question. It could have done without all the updates though.
