Even if Chris Cross did have X number of effect pedals connected to his bass presumably they weren't manipulating the instrument's strings for him. So how was he not playing it himself?

By the way, is he dead? If so he's the first member of Ultravox to go, I think. (When the last one goes, it'll be "All Laid Still.")

Presumably, it was also Cross operating the effects pedals. Maybe one of our resident musicians can confirm that playing bass plus effects is a more difficult skill to master than just playing bass alone.

SirC never got to see Ultravox, due to cancellations more than anything else.  Sadly, this is the ultimate cancellation.

Saw them twice.  The second time was after they released 'Brilliant'.  They couldn't decide which songs to drop to make room for the new ones, so they didn't drop any, instead doing a two-part show without a support band.  So it was like two shows in one.

Talking of supports, I got to see John Foxx (original Ultravox frontman) when he supported OMD. Lot of people were kicking themselves for turning up late to that one.

Wayne Kramer (MC5) dead at 75.

Proto-punk legend.

This leaves Dennis Thompson as the only living member of their classic lineup

Dennis Thompson has extinguished the classic line up by dying: https://eu.freep.com/story/entertainment/music/brian-mccollum/2024/05/09/dennis-thompson-mc5-drummer-obituary/73629138007/

Which makes drummer Dennis Thompson eligible to enter my "final band member left of a classic line-up" list for next year.

They haven’t even finished shovelling dirt on John Sinclair’s grave.

Well they’ll be remembered for dropping over in 100 days time.

RIP to the first punk band ever was.

Ignatius Jones of Jimmy and the Boys, an Australian shock rock/punk/new wave act, dead at 67 on the 7th of May. I never would've known his name had I not found his single "Like A Ghost" atop a pile of rubble. Really good stuff!

An actual, honest-to-god No Waver, no less. All four of my Minimalists continue to mock me by being alive 15 years after I made them a thread.

Much respect and all that to Chance, but it’s pretty unlistenable stuff if you ask me. And I usually like unlistenable stuff.

It was once again pretty quiet on the Pere Ubu front (they released a new album but did only a few shows) so I decided to look for any updates.. And i found an update from David Thomas a few days ago. There has been a lot going on, he married his gf/manager, he's been in the hospital and has had operations which were like hell.

Since i was posting about Gagarin in the Dead Pop Stars threat i looked up how good ol' David is doing now.. he peformed 2 weeks ago to celebrate his 71th birthday, and he is in an electric wheelchair now (which might not be a bad idea)

Laurie Lindeen of Minneapolis band Zuzu's Petals likely passed away suddenly today. Tributes are being posted, but nothing official yet.

She's the ex-wife of Paul Westerberg.
