time 8,602 Posted January 1, 2018 Here are my contributions to this year's DDP. No chance of winning (nor do I aspire to really); there's probably a name or two in there that won't even get the requisite obituary, even if the do die this year. Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 1, 2018 I think I really like gcreptile's risky team. He certainly has a lot of interesting names, and I think he might be able to dominate everyone else. Of course, we haven't seen The Living End's team, so I can't necessarily predict a winner yet...
msc 18,472 Posted January 1, 2018 1 hour ago, gcreptile said: Random comments and clarifications: The Les Mutrie of 2018: Derek Dudley ("history doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes"). Sadly, already dead in 2017. The Mao Kobayashi of 2018 - Thuy Thanh Truong, however her BBC profile is from 2015. My biggest gamble, such a DDT pick: Shalom Ouanounou. "My few remaining possible uniques are probably shared with DDT": Hector Timerman And I thought John Cocksy Cocks might have been unique... Marieke Vervoort: 26pts joker or 32pts? Also, I have three lesbians on my team. Abigail Kawananakoa could have been the fourth. I thought the Les Mutrie would be Overton or Latham Grant, though they were more non-leaguers. Latham Grant is fucked, he'd have been a lock for me if BBC local pages were still allowed. I think Truong was one of those people I saw for 2 seconds before dismissing their obit chances, but fortune favours the brave. My biggest gamble - keeping Catherine Nevin. Oh, and not main teaming Vervoort. Uniques - none of them. There's always someone I miss in my research categories and this year it appears to be Anna Pavord and John Cocks. Also I missed out that Tiffany Youngs cancer had got worse, but so it goes.
Predictor 1,018 Posted January 1, 2018 After only getting 3 points last year, I decided to go with mostly 'mainstream' picks (with a few exceptions). In alphabetical order: Spoiler 1. Mick Abrahams (1943): Jethro Tull guitarist. Not that he's terminally ill or anything, but he's had a few health issues in the past and several Baby Boomers musicians have died in the past few years or so. A gamble. 2. Eddie Alderson (1994): American actor who has lymphoma cancer since November 2016. He was in that Clint Eastwood movie Changeling a decade ago. Never been mentioned on this site before. 3. Buzz Aldrin (1930): Old age, worldwide famous, a typical Deathlist-y pick. Had some health problems a while back in Antarctica of all places. 4. Wilford Brimley (1934): For the fifth time in a row, this overweight, diabetes icon and actor makes the cut. 5. Bessie Camm (1904): Oldest person in United Kingdom at 113. 6. Rhonda Fleming (1923): I like to have at least one actor from the Golden Age of Hollywood, and she's more likely to go than someone like Lansbury, Saint or Havilland. Was on my theme team a few years ago. 7. Graeme Gibson (1934): Canadian novelist who supposedly has early-stage dementia. Hopefully he is "dementic" enough to forget that it's in the early stages, heh. His wife is the worldwide famous author Margaret Atwood, which should increase his obitability. Never been mentioned on this site before. 8. Artur Lekbello (1966): Former Albanian footballer who has something called muscle scarcity. Played mostly for Aris Thessaloniki, the Greek Euro 2004 team played a charity game for him earlier this year. British media likes all football-related stuff. Never been mentioned on this site before. 9. Kelly LeMieux (1967): American bass player who has AML. Probably the least likely to obit out of all my picks, but who knows, maybe some BBC journalist happens to be a fan or summat? Never been mentioned on this site before. 10. Barbara Lewis (1943): American r'n'b singer who recently retired from performing. Didn't look that well in one video. 11. Sacheen Littlefeather (1946): The Native American who read Brando's "Oscar-winning" speech in '74. I gave her her DDP debut by picking her a few years ago, but since she's added another cancer since then, she's back again. 12. Princess Christina Magnuson (1943): This Swedish royal is one of two returnees from last year. She's also one of two token Swedes on this year's squad. 13. John McCain (1936): A safe bet and a probable Drop 40 Bonus pick. 14. Hosni Mubarak (1928): The same type of category as Aldrin & McCain. 15. Olivia Newton-John (1948) JOKER: I don't think I've ever had a joker die in the DDP; if that tradition will continue or not remains to be seen... 16. Jonny Nilsson (1943): Swedish speed skater who won a gold medal in the 1964 Winter Olympics. Has incurable cancer that's spread to the skeleton, and with Winter Olympics coming up soon, I'm sure British newspapers will pick up on it if he goes this year. Never been mentioned on this site before. 17. Charlotte Rae (1926): Had her a few years ago, just like Littlefeather, and returns due to new information coming in during 2017. 18. Otis Rush (1935): There's this one team that tends to pick this guy, so it won't be a unique for anyone probably. He's a famous guitarist with some reported health issues. 19. Stefan Karl Stefansson (1975): Another one with Drop 40 Bonus potential. Probably the only chance of getting an Icelandic hit in a long time, cuz famous people don't exactly grow on trees up there. 20. Atal Vajpayee (1920): Former Indian prime minister. Reading through his health issues through the years, I'm surprised he's made it this far. tl;dr 1. Mick Abrahams 2. Eddie Alderson 3. Buzz Aldrin 4. Wilford Brimley 5. Bessie Camm 6. Rhonda Fleming 7. Graeme Gibson 8. Artur Lekbello 9. Kelly LeMieux 10. Barbara Lewis 11. Sacheen Littlefeather 12. Princess Christina Magnuson 13. John McCain 14. Hosni Mubarak 15. Olivia Newton-John JOKER 16. Jonny Nilsson 17. Charlotte Rae 18. Otis Rush 19. Stefan Karl Stefansson 20. Atal Vajpayee
Book 3,556 Posted January 1, 2018 Here are my DDP teams for 2018. I nearly kept my teams as they were, only replaced the hits with some new picks and maybe include the one or the other who seemed to be more "worthy" than others. Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 1, 2018 My only potential unique, Jacqui Forster, was a name that did fascinate me when I found her. Founder of the Woman At The Game, her goal is to try to get more women to go to football matches, and she's currently suffering from terminal cancer. Got a Guardian mention back in October, so I decided to punt on her. I think the bigger issue is the lack of age, but from the photo, she looks like someone in her mid 40's, and I suspect an age will come up at some point. Of course, her unique potential will probably be taken away by the Pelican or someone like that, so I might not even be successful on that front even if she does die and obit and an age shows up. Death Impends 7,975 Posted January 1, 2018 I had Forster on my shortlist but didn't pick her. She's in her mid 50s.

Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 1, 2018 @Death Impends Was Clegg the one you mentioned that you haven't thought of but some other info makes them a serious contender, or was that someone else?
Death Impends 7,975 Posted January 1, 2018 Funny story, that was actually Vervoort! I saw some "much more bad days" type articles in Dutch from November that signaled euthanasia would be very likely in coming months, since she already mentioned she'd use that as a benchmark. And then that late December interview made her an obvious no brainer for everyone. (I actually prefer it that she's super common knowledge, though, as I wasn't quite sure who to joker before) Clegg I mostly picked because it didn't feel right having only one musician on my team. Death Impends 7,975 Posted January 1, 2018 Times like these I'm relieved I steer clear of deathbed marriages... even if they have a "hook" to them like being the first same-sex marriage in Australia.
Joey Russ 7,227 Posted January 1, 2018 Of course, DDT is probably watching all these people who have died, and he probably laughing cause he has some picks that have not been mentioned yet that will continue his unique streak.
