Names we dislike

On a similar note, my name can be shortened in several ones and one thing that really pisses me off is people doing it without permission to be pally. Makes me properly tetchy.

I'm so thankful that I have a single syllable name for the very reason that these overly familiar cuntos can't bastardise it.

Anything ending in a 'y'.

Harry? Name is Harold.

Gerry? Name is Gerald.

Franny? Name is Francis .

Etc etc, folk that put abbreviations on a birth certificate should be shot.

This one is awful.

Also the butt of an old joke*.

*Briefly goes like this and having read it I defy you to look anyone called Franny squarely in the eye again.

Boy meets girl in club, both a bit pissed, he asks her name "Franny" she says. I'll never remember that he says. Just think of it as Fanny with an R added she says. Ok I'll remember that I think. They agree he can take her out again in a few days, "just knock on my door and ask for me" she says.

So a couple of days later he turns up at her house and her father answers the door, but in his nervousness he forgets her name...so, he thinks hard and remembers..."Oh hi there, is Crunt in?".

Ok, not a particularly good joke, but that's not the point. Which is as above.

True. I can't see Myra making a come back anytime soon though.

Edit. I was wrong, Myra has grown in popularity.

Myra can also be a nickname, for Mary iirc.

Exactly.....thought not sure why that is.  My matriarchal grandmother was Emma....but in the 1940-1990 range NO ONE would name a child ghastly 'Emma'.  Then the tide turned, and usually it is a movie star or character from TV etc and all the sudden a name picks up steam.  Now Emma is a top 5 name annually again.  We had very much considered it for my daughter in 2010 -- granted it would have had a family tie at least -- and even had friends call her Emma a few weeks whilst in the womb.  She ended up not Emma, but just sharing the story.

I was born in 1973 and there were shitloads of Emma’s of around my age. One in particular was a right slag :D

Quite a few in Glasgow.

Mind you, top 2 girls names in the UK in the 80s ie roughly my generation? Jessica and Jennifer, apparently. Have I ever met anyone by those names? Nope.

Had an auntie Jessie so that's one, and a school mate in the 70's called Jennifer.

Only one of each I can remember.

Debbie is a bitchy name.

Any normal (usually boy) name that adds an unncessary S to the end. Ex: Brooks, Jacks (I find this one particularly offensibe considering my name, Jack, is perfectly fine alone.)

Any name that starts with Mar. Ex: Marsha, Marty, Marlon/Marlin, Marla, Martin, Marshall, Marly, Mary.

Carmen is also a horrid name.

I had heard of this name but wasn't convinced it was real until I heard a woman shouting it at her child in a certain supermarket.

The same place where I subsequently heard another mum shouting at "Daytona!"

I hope for further entertainment there.

i despise, for no obvious reason, the name Jack. And it's become ubiquitous over the last decade despite being virtually obsolete - an anachronism - when I was growing up.

It reminds me a bit of a Monkey Dust sketch some of the names coming up here.

I can't find the initial part of this sketch, but involves potentially giving the baby names like Hercules. According to wikiquote, the initial sketch goes:

"

Mother: I know what we should call him. How about Jacoby?
Baby: [thinking] What?
Father: That's nice, although I had rather set my heart on Hugo.
Baby: [thinking] Hugo? Hugo?! You fucking twat!
Father: Then again, we could name him after my grandfather, Thursby.
Baby: [thinking] You absolute fucking tosser! They will beat me like a Chipperfield monkey!
Mother: No, I know what's nice.
Baby: [thinking] Dave! Steve! Chris! Steve! Dave! Anything!
Mother: Hercules!
Baby: [thinking] Oh, that's a good idea - if I want to be a fucking gladiator!
Father: The classical touch is nice, but how about Archimedes?
Baby: [thinking] How about "Fucking Gaylord" and be done with it!"

And then...

Naming a child Nevaeh is the actions of a thick person thinking they're being clever. Daytona; poor child that's going to be a millstone around the childs neck.

I tend to love Latin names but only a select amount and none of the long names.

you mean you wouldn't name your child West Virginia?

I hate the name Lee

West Virginia is the least of my concerns unfortunately, I have met multiple people named Texas, Hampshire, Carolina, Dakota, Georgia, Virginia, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, Nebraska, and even an Arkansas. It's getting out of hand!!!

I don't think you can complain about Carolina or Georgia.  Both these states were named after people.  Carolina is the Latin feminine form of Charles, and is in use in various countries.  Virginia has also been a given name for centuries, although the state's name is a reference to Elizabeth I (the Virgin Queen).

Yeah there's someone in my English class named Nevada. Always found it an odd name. I've met someone named America too. Keep in mind I'm a canuck :D

Kid has just reminded me there was a girl at her nursery called Treacle.  And there was that awful dog on The Voice a year or two back who’s parents actually named her Truly and you guessed it, middle name Scrumptious.  What a pair of cunts they must be.

I quite like Pamela, although it's out of fashion.   And Maurice is OK.  (Are these grandparents' names, I wonder?)

All the rest are dogs, cats, cows and horses.  And bears, obv.
