Glory to Syd ! He started pretty good in the band but used toomany acid! His songs will never die! It would be nice that floyd make a last gathering in London called Tribute to Syd Barret.

Sleep well!

I'm really annoyed now. I had Syd on my DDP last year and took him off for this year.

Very strange.

Last night, while watching Saxondale on TV, I started to strum on my

electric guitar. Towards the end of the jam, I tried out a song on

'The Madcap Laughs' called 'Here I go'. I hadn't played the guitar in months.....

Staying on the Barrett theme, I played a few tracks from his 'Barrett' album

whilst doing some ironing. I hadn't played that album in months.....

Then today, I was at work and this thought came into my head that someone famous

had died, and I immediately went to the BBC News website. Lo and behold....

The first album I ever bought was 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn'....

When I started playing guitar, I instinctively sought to learn the chords of his songs...

He was one of my heroes

Syd Barret has died at 60.He was as you probably know the founder and lead singer of Pink Floyd and an iconic figure in the 60s.

I think I need to steer clear of my record collection, I was listening to his album The Madcap Laughs at the weekend.

Oh well in for a penny, in for a pound *slides out the Max Bygraves record from its sleeve with a sly grin*

I wonder, I just wonder.....

GET OUT YER BEEFHEARTS, HE'S ON MY LIST....

MIB, I might've missed it elsewhere on this site but who is that band on your avatar picture? The guesses at MPFC towers include Thunderclap Newman and The Rasberries.

Stranger than fiction. Something similar happened to me last night. I started to think about Matthew Manning

http://www.matthewmanning.com/ But since Manning doesn't play the guitar and neither do I, I couldn't play one of his tracks, but if he did and if I did, I surely would have done. Then another thing.... he didn't die. I don't know what to make of it... like something out of a Floyd album.

Then something else. I began to think about Mollie Sugden who used to be in Are You Being Served that has a theme tune uncannily like that of the Floyd track, Money. And she didn't die either. Two people not easily connected who didn't die on the same night. Makes you think. In fact it did because I thought of someone else then whose name I have completely forgotten. Suppose he dies? I will never know.

Wait, have just remembered who it was: Peter Watkins of War Game fame. His film Privilege, was influential in the making of Pink Floyd The Wall. Now how weird is that: Matthew Manning, Mollie Sugden and Peter Watkins in a single musing on the eve (or thereabouts anyway) of Syd Barrett's death possibly at the very same time that themaninblack was playing "Here I go" although I wasn't watching TV at the time so can't be certain.

you're a naughty man, godot, but a very amusing one. i thought of you last night while i was reading one of your posts, so perhaps mrs godot should check you're still alive...

my avatar guess is badfinger, specially as two of 'em are dead (or is it three, now?) - partly for that, and partly 'cause i think i recognise pete ham on the right.

beefheart - been very ill for years, hasn't he? last i heard was that he couldn't move around his large canvases to paint, rather he had someone (probably his long suffering missus) move the canvas for him. this was some years ago, when mike barnes' biography came out. mike used to get all kinds of calls from the beefheart camp alternately offering help and then threatening legal action during the time he was writing it. haven't seen him for a few years now, but if anyone would be au fait with how DVV is these days, he would - so perhaps an e-mail to the wire would be in order?

You know what Pulphack, it IS Badfinger, when I patched through to MIB's information on this site it's Pete Ham that appears as his personal photo. It's okay I guess, I mean it's not as if Ham is gonna ring up and object now is it?

Re Beefheart: We had us a lively little thread gannin' a while back, here.

Misleading M32, though it was actual footage of his death, very relieved it wasn't, thanks though, nice to see.

 Syd, Shine on You Crazy Diamond, hope you have found peace.

Guest Neil

Does anyone know what time Syd died? I was over a friend's house friday night and he decided to put on the piper at the gates of dawn, which he has on original vinyl. I'd never heard it, and he said he hadn't listened to it in at least ten years. The next day we heard about Syd's death and we both thought it was eerie.

I have just two Beefheart albums.

Ice cream for crow and Trout Mask Replica... I haven't listened to either for some time...

This is bugging me. The picture is very small. I'm tempted to go for either Curved Air, Fairport Convention or Steeleye Span but I think they all had more band members than that and I don't think that is either Sonja Kristina or Maddy Prior. I think maybe Steeleye Span.

I can't really work out if it's two men and two women in the photo. If it is I'll take a guess at ABBA

If it isn't then I'll hazard a guess from your clue "it's not as they're normally known to look like." and say KISS ?
