Madchester

Recommended Posts

Thought I'd start a thread for the musical and cultural phenomenon of Madchester seeing as many of the scene's movers and shakers are now entering their 60's, hoovered up vast amounts of drugs at the time, and are highly obitable.

Triggered by watching this video and having a gasp at the state of Mike Pickering (Hacienda DJ, M People) - skip to 4.30. He looks terrible.

On the other hand most of New Order look pretty good (although Bernard is now morphing into the old bloke who sits in the same chair in the pub every weekday afternoon nursing a pint of bitter, reading the paper and occasionally reminiscing about his time working for the local bus company).

@NotTheNagsHeadReading is at least trying to contribute some originality.

All you do around here is complain constantly.

I think it’s a fine idea for a thread, quite honestly!

You’re right about Pickering. He looks 85, poor bastard.

Exactly.
Name one person who this thread was needed for.  Just give me a name.

Re: Pickering, he's certainly aged but he's 62 so is no spring chicken. Not convinced he looks or sounds seriously ill though.

Shaun Ryder says that the 20 years of heroin abuse (he didn't abuse it, did he? He used it the way it's supposed to...) didn't lead to any lasting damage.

Apparently, he had low testosterone, but he got it fixed and now his hair is growing back somewhat..

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/may/10/shaun-ryder-i-was-a-heroin-addict-for-20-odd-years-but-theres-been-no-damage-off-that

He does have hereditary thyroid problems, though, and a new hip. And ADHS and dyslexia.

There'll be a new album.

Small Shaun Ryder interview:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/jan/21/sunday-with-shaun-ryder-i-would-be-out-on-my-bike-now-if-i-wasnt-talking-to-you

So far he's got one false hip, a chip in his spine and thyroidism.

He seems to be doing alright, all things considered.

Loved the annual Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery a couple of weeks back

THIS won joint third place, characterful shot of our Sean partaking of a vape

Report of the death of Steven Tajti, member of Paris Angels who had a few minor UK chart singles and were probably known as the early band of Paul Wagstaff who went on to Happy Mondays/Black Grape:

Drummer Simon Worrall died in 2011. The band were in the UK Indie Chart top ten for a while with Perfume, but the same single only managed a peak of 55 on the Official Chart in July 1991:

A really underappreciated track. First heard on the classic Indie Top CD - volume 10, the best in the series!

They certainly 'borrowed' a lot from Slade, T Rex, Beatles, Glitter and the Coca-Cola advert.

On the other hand they were the biggest British band of the 90s by far, Liam Gallagher had an incredible voice (which is still in pretty good nick), Noel is probably the best UK melody writer since McCartney, a couple of the songs have effectively reached national treasure status, and they also have popularity with the younger generation who weren't around in the 90s.

The numbers don't lie and this tour will dwarf any other British band reunion there has ever been (far ahead of Blur, Police, Stone Roses etc).

His horrible whiny voice is one of the reasons I dislike Oasis.

I can take or leave Oasis, I just can't stand their fans.

Tend to be either terribly middle class twats who consider them edgy and authentic, or scally gobshites
