Pope Benedict XVI

Does he get the big funeral if he goes?

A platinum jubilee, State Funeral, Papal funeral and a Coronation all in 12 months. What a time to be alive!

I think so. He still holds a title as 'emeritus pope' so he is still a pope.

What a majestic top 5 they would make for the 2023 DeathList!

Has the DL ever had all its top five as successes?

Harris and Whale are not as ill as the other ones.

If he still Pope today. Maybe, he could rival Queen Elizabeth as the most significant death for 2022 if he die this year. But Queen Elizabeth still the biggest death for 2022 despite of this factor. A powerful queen served for more than 70 years until death definitely had the biggest impact in the history!

The Deathlist forum is currently telling me Benedict thread is HOT.

The Deathlist forum software has terrible taste in men.

How could he be? He was only Pope for five minutes.

Closer to seven years 317 days and five minutes if my rapid reckoning is right.

Thanks for the correction.  I was only a little bit out.

Yeah but they are still on the way out and extremely unlikely to make 2024 especially Whale.

Just an info: Benedict XVI is the last surviving individual to have been created a cardinal by Pope Paul VI back in 1977.

The next after him are: Thai Michael Michai Kitbunchu; Angolan Alexandre do Nascimento (the oldest living cardinal); New Zelander Thomas Williams all created cardinal the 2nd of February 1983 by John Paul II.

(Un)interesting fact on him, there's a heart disease hospital in Luanda named after Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento. I think with him there's a chance of the rare "dying in a hospital that's named after you" that not many people have achieved (Hershel W. Williams did, not sure about others)

If he die next year, he will be the most significant death/biggest death for 2023 unless someone like Vladimir Putin or Barack Obama also die next year.

Every year has its big deaths. I can't see Benny as one of them, unless you're big into short serving religious heads

Boggles my mind how a frail 95-year-old Pope was not included on the list.

If Pope Benedict XVI goes before Sunday, will he surpass Queen Elizabeth II as the most significant death of 2022?

In my opinion.

1. Liz

2. Gorba

...

x. Pope Ben

Most of the people who'd consider him the "biggest death of the year" would be that small group of mostly US hardline catholics who claim/believe he's still "God's pope" because they hate Francis.

Not as short as you might think- it was long enough to stir things up quite a bit- long enough for Benedict to figure out he was in the wrong place!  If he survives until Sunday he really needs to be on the 2023 Death List!!!

I think his real significance probably lies in the work he did before being Pope when he advised on doctrine. He was very hard line on traditional Catholic bugbears like abortion and same sex relationships but he was soft on members of the clergy who committed abuse. I think the main reason he stepped down was that he recognised he was not the vehicle for change the Church needed and/or to avoid answering some awkward questions

The Catholic Church today: an example of child protection

FACT: The Catholic Church is perhaps the safest environment for children today.

The measures implemented by the Catholic Church against aggressive and harassing behavior cannot be compared to the projects implemented by any other organization. Since the start of the sexual harassment crisis, the Catholic Church has:

Introduced a "zero tolerance" policy whereby any priest who is reasonably accused is immediately removed from his ministry. Law enforcement authorities are also notified.

Trained more than 5 million children, giving them skills to help them protect themselves from sexual exploitation.

Trained more than 2 million adults, including 99 percent of all priests, how to recognize the signs of sexual abuse.

Thoroughly screened more than 2 million individuals, including seminarians and priests.

Introduced "victim assistance coordinator" positions in every diocese to ensure that victims of harassment will be heard.

Conducts annual independent audits in all dioceses, monitoring compliance with the innovative 2002 charters for the protection of children and young people.

All dioceses have established sexual abuse control commissions, often made up of child welfare specialists, child psychologists, and sexual abuse experts, to investigate any lawsuits or claims of sexual abuse by priests.

No other organization's measures come close to the measures taken by the Catholic Church to protect the children entrusted to its care. In this regard, the Catholic Church of the 21st century is an example for other institutions to follow in the protection of young people

Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI is in serious but stable health conditions.

"His situation hasn't changed compared to yesterday", sources in contact with the former Mater Ecclesiae monastery tell ANSA.

The Pontiff emeritus spent the night continuously under the supervision of doctors and monitoring will continue in the next few hours.
