Other old warhorses not mentioned already:

Peter Alliss,

Stuart Hall,

Max Robertson,

Reg Gutteridge,

Richie Benaud

Godot, I completely agree with you. Sometimes, listening to Barry Davies was a joy, but for every moment of commentating genius, he ruined it by moaning. I think you hit the nail spot on & bang! Still, BD was far better than the current new crop of football commentators (Tydelsley especially).

Arlott was class personified. Reading supporter too, so he had excellent taste!!

Sad to know that the old perv Stuart Hall is the only survivor from that list.It really is true that only the good die young !

Gerald Sinstadt (90), Dickie Davis (87) & Barry Davies (82) are the last of the sports presenting/commentating gang now from pre-decimalisation days. (Apart from S Hall)

And Murray Walker, Henry Blofield and and Ted Dexter. Also Motson was on BBC Radio in the 1960's.

Can we get Sinstadt on the DL in 2021? Maybe his love of performing arts puts him into their eyeline?

Not many of those died young, thankfully but I get your point.

It’s time Stuart Hall faced his final “knockout” blow

As Blowers has been mentioned, it seems an appropriate time to remind everyone that another former TMS commentator, Neil Durden-Smith is still alive, aged 87.  He commentated from 1969 to 1974, which ought to be enough to earn him an obit, but he was also Aide-de-camp of the NZ governor-general Lord Cobham. If that still doesn't get him an obit he can fall back on being Judith Chalmers' husband.

I must admit I'm a bit surprised than none of the Yewtree suspects/pervs have committed suicide or at least tried.I guess they don't have enough  of a conscience to do it ...

And in that case is presumably the father of two-bit TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith who still pops up from time to time though not as much as he did a decade ago.

A thread for commentators? That would be this thread.

Fair to cross post I guess, but FYI it was reported fifteen days ago on the Chequered Flag thread. If Thatcher is the Lewis Hamilton of death announcements in terms of response, then this is Andrea Moda type speed..

Henry Blofeld (Blowers) on Channel Four just now. He sounds as excitable as ever.

Nigel Starmer-Smith also at a push.

Upon looking up the old rugby international, Wiki reveals that Nigel Starmer-Smith has dementia and been living in a care home for ages.

(I state I pay no heed to Wiki facts, but it's something). Edit: The piece is on Twitter, I had a quick look. Awful, but inspiring to listen to his son.

So why did I look up Nigel? Well, here's his wife's death notice: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/250808/starmer-smith

Not a great history of survival in that family, by the looks of it. We might yet see Nigel on our pages in fairly short order.

Commentator Gerald Sinstadt dies aged 91. Don't recall him ever making the list, despite many asking.

Voice of Childhood Sat Afternoons on Final Score. Then later in the evening rounding up the games that weren't selected for highlights on Match of The Day. Also rounded up games that had been played midweek on Football Focus

Although it's the football that was his largest body of work, I'll forever remember him for his brilliant commentary from 1992 and the rowing when the Searles beat the Abergnales. I'm sure there's a you tube link somewhere but no idea how to inbed it.

Sad news

OK so the BBC can whack this out instantly but there is still not a proper Obit for Clifford Rose

I do recall the scandal when he was caught knocking one out in a porn cinema. A moment lovingly recreated by Viz's Roger Mellie strip wherein Roger was similarly apprehended and responded by asking what his ticket price had been paid for if he wasn't able to pleasure himself to the money shot moment.

Do you know I dimly recalled there being some sort of Bough-esque thing that happened in connection with him years and years ago. Thanks for the memories (or mammeries, in his case?).
