Dave Lanning dead at 78. Commentated on the first televised nine-darter (John Lowe in the 84 Matchplay), as well as three of the first six. Basically a less try-hard Sid Waddell.

Saw the clip on ITV4 just now on mute. Noticed the expression on Jacqui Oatley's face and assumed Lowe had died!

One for the future maybe... Seems strange Pat Murphy is 'scaling back' to only doing football on a Saturday, no more cricket at all. Says he took the decision last year, his choice etc, but I do wonder .....

Isn't this a redundancy (or vice versa).  Commentators and presenters?  SMH.
Oh go ahead and chastise me whilst you dance on the head of a pin differentiating the two....

Whilst there may be an overlap Commentators will cover those associated with Sport and Presenters for light entertainment.

Meh, Drew Morphett, australian veteran sportscaster dies at 69 and gets Daily Mail and Guardian coverage:

But I'm still waiting for a Harry Beitzel obit for the Generation game.

Surprising to me that it took that long and only indirectly. I assumed when I picked him on the DDP that he had enough prominence in Aussie media to slide into Mail or Guardian easily. Maybe his career was too "early"? (in contrast to the above sportscaster who only retired last year)

John Motson to end his career. He assumes he'll see the end of the footy season. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/41159991

I was only wondering the other day about when Motty would jack it in. He's in his seventies now.

Clive Tyldesley is in his sixties and with his beloved Rooney out of the England picture, he might be thinking of retirement too, or is that wishful thinking?

LOADS of local affection and sadness over the death of Neil Bell - genuinely one of the most enthusiastic and best loved sports commentators in the local networks.

cf Dave Callaghan. Seemed to have been genuinely loved by the cricketerati of all flavours, plus stalwarts of local radio.

Ian Darke and others on twitter say Peter Brackley (Football Italia, Saints and Greavsie, Pro Evo, you'll know the voice) is "seriously ill".

So Brackley is the first of the Saint and Greavsie presenters to go (stood in for Greaves when he was ill) , that's a shock in itself.
