Usually the first post is the particular DP rules and guidelines.  I would suggest reading a page or two into any DP you would have interst in to see what discussions may have taken place; sometimes soneone has already asked and answered a question that pops into your head.

As for the Cup it’s an annual event starts in February so you’ll have to wait.  MMMDP is coming up in June so be ready!

MOT changes

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/mot-changes-20-may-2018

Defects found during an MOT will be categorised as:

Dangerous: Fail. The vehicle is a "direct and immediate risk to road safety or has a serious impact on the environment".

It must not be driven until it has been repaired.

Major: Fail. The fault "may affect the vehicle's safety, put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment".

The car, van or motorcycle must be repaired immediately.

Minor: Pass. A defect has "no significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment".

It must be repaired as soon as possible

This confuses me.  I get that a car with dangerous fault must not be driven, but up to now I've got my car MOT'd a month before expiry so that if it fails I have a bit of breathing space to get things fixed.  If it's minor stuff I let the MOT garage fix it if they have time the same day, but I also have another guy who services the car and can fix most things.  Does this mean we no longer have that grace period?  If I have a "major" fault and the garage can't fix it that day, can I still take the car home and bring it back?

There has never actually been a grace period. Technically, if your car failed an MOT and you drove it away for repair and got stopped you would have been nicked for driving a vehicle without an MOT, even if the test had been done BEFORE the old one ran out.

People are rightly jumping up and down over this, there are some utter wank shafts out there who may decide to bullshit and fail your car, which at a stroke, is too dangerous to be moved and then shaft you for the repair costs.

I would actually say that the biggest con artists likely to do that are companies like 'slow unfit'  who have form for bullshitting on tyres, exhausts and the like.

There is nothing wrong with you having the car removed for repair, so long as it is not driven away but trailered or taken away on a breakdown wagon.

This is my worry.  I do trust the MOT garage, have been going there for many years now, but it's unlikely that they could do the repair the same day as they are always busy.

This does seem like a gift for unscrupulous garages.  I won't bore you with my experience getting tyres from the company you referred to, but suffice to say I vowed never to darken their doors again.

Officialdom.

You wait, give it 6 months, when there will be plenty of data to pull, and you see more diesel cars  failing than ever before.

This is not, as the powers that be suggest, to help us all have safe cars, it is deliberate and calculated to ensure that vehicles that are commonly seen as old bangers are 'persuaded' off the roads for good.

It is the only way they can enforce draconian environmental policy without being held solely responsible for it.

Want proof? The 40 yr old rule. Vehicles that are not 'substantially' modified and registered in 1978 or earlier are now exempt from MOT testing.

This follows on form the pre 1960 mot exemption.

In effect, hundreds of millions of pounds a year are spent by  enthusiasts of old/classic cars looking after them, spawning an industry to support them and bring shit loads of money into the economy.

On the basis that you cannot have a two tier MOT test, they HAD to ensure that the cash cow kept delivering, hence the exemption.

They have also decided to leave be kit cars. They proposed making them compliant to the current MOT test making cars obsolete overnight due to older engine designs that power them ( unable to meet current emission testing ) and had it gone ahead, kit car manufacturers would have gone out of business overnight.

They have an ulterior bullshit motive.

Not sure on the first one, but the oldest person to date on the deathlist was Brooke Astor with her death at 105 (Ruby Muhammad was reportedly 110 but that was wrong), and the youngest was George Lineker at 3. Hopefully no one younger gets on...

The word "relevant" when referring to music.  What does that actually mean?

I use Ubuntu and have some mp4 files (not porn this time) that I want to watch on TV with a DVD player. Does anyone know a simple way to do this?

An HDMI lead assuming both compatible or cast it direct to TV?

Why involve the DVD?

My words and tech fail me. My lovely wife is living 20 metres from me with three kids. In a different house.  She's hot! But she doesn't know it. She's like a female Townshend without the talent. But still great. What is HDMI and DVD? Deep down I am a musician. Deep down I'm a pinball wizard. What are my options? I think I'd better get some brandy!
