Adding to things that happened in the Saudi royal family over the past day and a half to 2 days or so, another Saudi Prince, Abdul Aziz bin Fahd, has died aged 44. Allegedly, his death occurred during a gunfight during which he was resisting arrest. His father was King Fahd, who was the 2nd king before the current one.

He was at one point the head of the Office of the Council of Ministers (11 years, 2000-2011) and was one of the closest aides to the previous king, King Abdullah, before they had a falling out, possibly over his closeness to Crown Prince Nayef, who was Crown Prince for a couple of months until his death from what was officially called "cardiac problems."

The Saudi royal family remains majorly complicated in its relations and what influence any member has at any given time, but I'm pretty sure both this death and Mansour's over the space of about a day or so make it pretty clear that the purge of competitors for the throne isn't just limited to the arrests.

Saudi news agencies seem to be pulling the story. Suggests is could be false, or that he survived.

More importantly, Abdul Aziz bin Fahd was/is the "shabby sheik" who parties in New York by hiring venues out, paying top models to be there and then stands in the corner looking like an Arab Kevin Smith drinking Slurpees

With the Worlds biggest IPO in the offing from them, he can afford to.

The Exchanges are prostituting themselves to get it with them.

Are you implying that the crackdown on various senior political figures in Saudi Arabia, along with Casino Donny's  volte face on the House of Saud, is somehow related to the Aramco IPO? Surely not...

Gosh no. It would be ludicrous to imagine that was the reason.

More news on Abdul Aziz bin Fahd: ex-CIA agent says he's dead, was apparently a business partner of just quit Lebanese PM. What I'm curious about is why all the changes right now, up to and including the well documented change in Crown Prince.

(Yeah I know....but we don't get many chances in this thread so sue me)
Sheikha Hessa bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the mother of Sheikh Khalifa, President of the UAE, and the first wife of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, founding President of the UAE, has died, it has been announced.

I thought it meant 'daughter of', but IMBW.

Bint is a rather old-fashioned slang word for a girl or woman in England.  Probably picked up by soldiers in the Middle East during the world wars, so the usage has all but died out.

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's 'daughter of' as well - which is why bin is a thing, in that it means 'son of'

You may be correct on that point.  I like the sounds of it at least.

Prince Bandar bin Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who I think was the son of King Salman (who can keep up?) is dead, reported by scurrilous media to have committed suicide after being ordered to leave the UK.

Oman's Sultan Qaboos has sent condolences anyway.

I don't think so, there was Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud followed by Khalid bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who's the third son of Prince Bandar, and there's so many Bandars I don't know any more.

According to this Moroccan report, it was this feller, Chairman of Al-Watan, Saudi progressive newspaper.

There are suggestions that he was trying to escape from an abduction attempt, accidentally killing himself in the process.
