When trying to figure out how important a death is, you've got to take into consideration how publicly active a person was in their final years, and how relevant they were to the whole world (with US, UK 'weighing' more than the rest of the first world, which weighs more than the second world, which weighs more than the third world). Anyways, this might cause some of you Brits to spit out your tea, or choke on your scone, out of shock.. but, I think David Bowie was more important of a death than Margaret Thatcher. Thatcher wasn't seen often in public in her final years, nor did she do anything of significance in her final years. She was basically the British (and female) version of Ronald Reagan - in political views, but also in fame/importance. So a very big death, but not something the whole world went crazy about (except for all the pink-haired, emotionally weak, extreme leftist, fandom-joining, Tumblr loving, young adults, whose sexualities you need to look up the definition: for them it was a big deal and a cause for celebration). Bowie's music was enjoyed, however, all across the world. He was very relevant in both the US and the UK. He actually did something before his death - released a new album. Plus his death was an unexpected shocker, Thatcher was old and known to be ill. Also, another thing - put down your tea and your scones - Obama dying is more significant to Brits and the world than Cameron dying is to Americans and the world. It's like that for all politicians. (Some Living examples: Queen Elizabeth, George Bush Sr, Jimmy Carter, John Major) Class 2: Internationally famous public figures Entertainers and authors etc - plus those who are massive in UK cultural history or worldwide cultural history. (Some living examples: Prince, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Mick Jagger, Kieth Richards , Vera Lynn, William Roache, Barbara Windsor, Tom Baker) Class 3: People's who are household names in the United Kingdom regardless of origin of heritage, but not necessarily internationally famous. (Some living examples: Bernard Cribbins, Norman Lamont, Alan Shearer, Kieth Gillespie, Steve McFadden, Andrew Niel) Class 4: Low-rent celebrities whose fame derives from short careers, or careers made up of bit-part work popping up here and there. SC Historically important is a bit more lenient than just political figures, if someone like Einstein was still around they'd probably creep into that class.
