The clarification is welcome, as in the UK we do not tend to use the phrase "hospice care" when the patient is at home.

Most of us would understand it to mean that the patient is IN a hospice.

Good to hear from you Harry.  I thought that was Joe Stalin when I first saw it.

I guess no one questioned Mrs. Bush recently then.

In the US of A 'hospice' is a service, not a place.  Also, over here a hospital is a building, so we say someone went to 'the hospital' (like the store, the concert hall, the whatever).  I'm not sure why 'the' is left out on your side of the Pond, though I suspect it's a service and not a place -- but I always leave it out when I'm on this site out of politeness.

A hospice in the UK is a specialised sort of hospital dedicated to nursing terminally ill and dying patients.  Only palliative care.  Sometimes they admit long-term terminal patients who are not yet on the brink of death, in order to give temporary respite to family carers.  That's common with hospices for children.

I think we don't say "the hospital" because it sounds like there is only one!   We either use it as a general term ('she's in hospital') or we are more specific and use the name of the hospital* ('she's in St Thomas's').

*Sometimes this can be impenetrable to non-locals.

'He's in the General'  (passim)

'She's in the JR' (Oxford)

'He's in the Battle' (formerly Reading)

According to her nephew they believe she'll pull through it. She is alert, laughing and talking. Honestly I hope she gets the fuck out of this world soon. I could never stand that fat fuck much (her songs are good though).

Ah, but weren't we talking about this just the other day?  The patient rallies shortly before dying.

I think when Drol attacks and insults you he really likes you.  At least that's how it works with charon. :)

Social media is starting to say that she’s dead. Of course, I’m waiting for more info, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it’s true...

If she isn't dead it will be another Brian Matthew or Brickhouse Brown scenario.

I thought so. There’s also this, though I’d take it with a grain of salt:

I'd take it with a tonne of salt considered that was tweeted over 1 day ago and I'm suspicious of anyone with 4 numbers at the end of their twitter handle as a reliable news source. Chevyboy2266 doesn't seem like Aretha's best bud.

That, and the fact that his most recent tweet before him was two years ago.

Anyways, Stevie Wonder is visiting Aretha Franklin now, which has me suspecting that she could die at any moment if she hasn’t already...

Stevie Wonder says she looked fit as a fiddle and he couldn't see a thing wrong with her.
