Aretha Franklin

Big year for major music deaths. Dolores O'Riordan, Avicii, Danny Kirwan, XXXTentacion, now Aretha Franklin - wide variety of genres, of course.

RIP to the Queen of Soul. Aretha was literally living history, from her friendship with Martin Luther King, to singing at Obama's inauguration.

Xxxtentacion doesn't deserve to be in the same sentence as Aretha.

Queen and the King dead on the same day...

I've been browsing and it turns out more royalty deaths on this day!

1948: The Sultan of Swath, Babe Ruth

1997: The Emperor of Qawwali, Nusrat Ali Fateh Kahn

1938: King of the Delta Blues: Robert Johnson

And another - Count Prince Miller

Aretha is definitely the biggest musical death of the year.Stephen Hawking in my view the biggest hit overall.

Neither pretty much all those mentioned in that post, except for MLK.

And one has to say, a very big miss from the Committee.

Aye! Everybody's a fucking expert after the event.

Aretha was not on my shadow list. She was performing in November 2017. Understandable she is missed off the list.

I agree the only time alarm bells were raised for me was back in march when she looked like a skeleton on stage, even some people might've missed her because @Sir Creep was literally arguing that her appearance was down to bad lighting.

Honestly I think you just need to see how many people had her high up on their Inverse DP lists (me included) to see how few people thought that she would actually breathe her last this year.

Oh come on. Have a heart.  He could do  "the wheels on my chair go round and round, round and round" very well.

If they have the right to moan that she didn’t make the list somewhere, it’s the Crowdsource list because she just didn’t make that list.

Yes, Aretha Franklin somehow is a big miss, but I can't blame the Committee for not picking her – I didn't pick her either in the DDP or the DL-Prediction Game! At least I was right predicting that the Committee wouldn't pick her!

Yeah, treat my list as a springboard. I've gone for featured artists on singles...plenty more with backing singers, album and single track musicians, yada yada yada.....

I'll give that to you, but otoh there was probably a place for her or someone else in light of a few ridiculous and dreadful choices (Ronnie Wood for starters.  What's the set of circumstances in which he dies at 70?).  I won't belabor the point.  But yes, hindsight can be 20-20.

Er, he had lung cancer and stated that he wouldn't have chemotherapy because he didn't want to lose his hair.

However since then it has emerged that it was isolated and successfully treated.  And he is touring.

You're one to talk. You were the one that was arguing that her apperance back in march was done to bad lighting. Hearing you lecture anyone about missing Aretha Franklin is just rich.
