I did search to see if she had an individual thread but couldn’t find it - apologies.

Another Day in paradise !

What happens these days ? Seeing that Thatcher published here, I knew it was Day O Connor ! A shame, She would have been a perfect candidate for the list (I’d say She is à miss in some ways…)

Aw, shit. Seen many clips of this when they’ve gone viral in the past, he seems like a lovely gentleman who has a great sense of justice without losing a shred of compassion. Sincerely hope he recovers.

If the article is dated 7 December and it says "he died on Saturday", that surely means he died on 2 December, no?

Jiang Ping, most important Chinese legal scholar, dead at 92. Breaking news on all Chinese news sites.

He succeeded Zou Yu as president of CUPL and was still holding a tour of conferences this year.

Senior legal scholars in China include the aforementioned Zou Yu (1920) and former SC president Ren Jianxin (1925).

Jiang Ping was one of the quite liberal "three elders on the Chinese rule of law" with Li Buyun (李步云) who's 90 and Guo Daohui (郭道晖) who's 95. I recall googling Daohui as he was on Du Daozheng's birthday greetings list a few months ago and he has looked frail for years.

Australia has some OLD ass ex-judges (they have to retire at 70 so no RBGing), and they seem to have a real longevity.

  1. Sir Anthony Mason (b.1925) - still active in the late 2010s, but since COVID or so the lectures in his name have been given on his behalf by younger judges
  2. Sir William Deane (b.1931) - also governor-general
  3. Sir Daryl Dawson (b.1933) - probably the quietest, apparently helps judge student competitions but idk how recent that is
  4. Michael McHugh (b.1935) - self-made man, wife an ex MP also in her 80s
  5. Ian Callinan (b.1937)
  6. Murray Gleeson (b.1938) - known ironically as the Smiler, his soul was once described as "a vortex"
  7. Michael Kirby (b.1939) - first who was openly gay and state-school educated, still extremely active and popular
  8. William Gummow (b.1942) - nearly died from DVT on a flight, became frail after that but still very professionally active
  9. Mary Gaudron (b.1943) - involved in some huge court case involving her sister

And honourable mention to Wylie Gibbs (b.1922), brother of dead Chief Justice Harry (1917-2005). MP in his own right and 101 now.

Not sure if all would QO, but Deane and Kirby in particular would get a lot of coverage.

(Behind paywall)

Never heard anyone who said he was ill (much less anything bad to say about him - always in high regard, and had to be to have served under 4 presidents).

I more-so meant within TIGTA or the IRS itself. Wasn't highly publicized either way to be honest.

I did a search for "Posner" and didn't see his name mentioned anywhere on this board, so excuse me if this is repeated information.

Judge Richard Posner has had Alzheimer's since 2017; however, he lost a lawsuit a few months ago saying he was too incapacitated to enter into a contract and pay wages in 2018. https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/former-judge-richard-posner-loses-latest-bid-dismiss-wage-lawsuit-2023-09-26/

He's a guaranteed NYT obit when he passes away as he's supposedly the most cited US legal scholar in history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Posner He is currently 84 years old. He presided over the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and taught at the University of Chicago School of Law.
