PM of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, has prostate cancer.

Patients with a similar medical profile and treatment as Mr Lee have a cancer-specific survival rate of 99 per cent at 15 years, said the PMO, citing data from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in the United States.

Seems like a remote chance. I guess they might screen for prostate cancers and the vast majority of those are medically insignificant (early stage indolent cancers).

I'm reading Daniel Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow" at the moment. For those that don't know, Kahneman is a psychologist and economics nobel-prize winner. Yesterday, I read through a chapter of "expert opinion vs. statistics" and it specifically discussed medical experts vs. medical statistics. It turned out that the opinions of medical experts are at most about as good, but never better and mostly worse than statistics. So yeah, one should pay much more attention to such statistics than to some experts who say that person XYZ, or let's say, for example, Sam Simon, has at most 6 months to live.

Francesco Schettino has been found guilty of manslaughter. According to Dutch media he's been sentenced to 16 years.

His colleague Lai Sai-ming, captain of MV Sea Smooth, that on 1 October 2012 hit and partially sank pleasure boat Lamma IV, killing 39 people, gets 8 years.

Pornhub star Mia Khalifa receives death threats after being ranked the site's top adult actress

might be considering her for my themed DDP "slain by sin" list next year...

her young age would made her worth at least 15 points with the unnatural causes bonus

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mia_Khalifa

Considering on-line Death threats - are the people who make them capable of acting on them? Are they even capable of walking to refridgerator to refuel without assistance?

Professor and author Oliver Sachs has terminal cancer and at 81 he likely won't see 2016, making him a post in the Ivory tower forum. But if he should.....!

Hell yeah, and well worth reading if you like the kind of humour/insight on this site. The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat being an accessible and entertaining place to start.

June Brown looked awful last night in the live section, but apparently apart from being deaf she is in remarkable health for 88, so who knows? doubt she will die next year probably in 10 years time but at 88 years of age she could quite easily decline quite quickly

So yesterday, at the Oscars they celebrated 50 years of The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews was there. Christopher Plummer was not.

Two points of added information, off the top of my head:

1) Plummer is still acting full time, he has four or five films either filming or in post-production currently.

2) He really, really, really hates The Sound of Music.

For Julie Andrews most people just remember her from Sound of Music or Mary Poppins whereas Plummer's been working solidly on at least a couple of movies a year playing a variety of roles. But because he plays a variety of roles you don't generally automatically see him and think "oh that's the guy from Sound of Music". Andrews usually plays characters where there's a passing reference to Sound of Music or Mary Poppins, or she's parodying either character.

Yeah, but she had a spell of getting fed up with that and countered the cute image by getting her tits out on screen, didn't she?

That was in 1981 in the film S.O.B.

A dwarf actor named Ben Woolf is in critical condition after a car accident...

http://www.thewrap.com/american-horror-story-ben-woolf-hit-by-car-critical-condition/

I never heard of him but he was apparently in American Horror Story (which I don't watch)

Ben Woolf's not an option for 2016
