MariNisia 4,184 Posted May 11, 2021 11 hours ago, Youth in Asia said: Who? DAME PATRICIA ROUTLEDGE: English actress, comedian and singer with a career of 70 years. Patricia Routledge started working in TV in the early 1950s, but she also recorded an album, "Presenting Patricia Routledge", and worked in feature film productions and radio as well. She's an accomplished stage actress. She has had a great career in theatre. She made her stage debut in 1952 and her Broadway debut in 1966. Routledge's singing voice is genuinely impressive. Her vocal range was labelled as a mezzo-soprano and a contralto. She won a Tony Award for her performance in the musical "Darling of the Day" in 1968. She won an Olivier Award for her work in "Candide" in 1988. She found a second home in the Hollywood cinema, starring in a number of successful films such as "To Sir with love" (1967) with Sidney Poitier, "30 is a dangerous age, Cynthia" (1968) with Dudley Moore, "Pretty Polly" (1968) with Hayley Mills, "The Bliss of Mrs. Blossom" (1968) with Shirley MacLaine or "The Imitation Game" (1980) with Nicholas Le Prevost. She starred in the first-ever "Talking Heads" monologue by Alan Bennett. Routledge starred in another two Bennett monologues, delivering a BAFTA-nominated performance for "A Lady of Letters" in 1988. She starred in "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates", a BBC detective drama series from the 90's. She portrayed a formerly working-class woman in the comedy series "Keeping Up Appearances" in 1990. She still gets "Keeping Up Appearances" fan mail from all over the world. Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1993. Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2004. She received an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from Lancaster University for her contribution to drama and theatre in 2008. Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to theatre and charity in 2017. She received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from University of Chester for her contributions to theater and television in 2019. Honorary president of the Association of English Singers and Speakers. Ambassador for the charity Royal Voluntary Service. A classy lady, a top rated actress and a wonderful human being.
harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy 1,684 Posted May 11, 2021 Can't she be lumped in with her gf Betty Boothroyd, or did they hit the skids? I'm not au fait with the OAP rug-munchers scene, I'm afraid.

I suspect when the grim reaper arrives at her door to inform her that she has "kicked the bucket", no doubt she will grimace and inform him it's, "kicked the bouquet" and shut the door in his face. 1

John Key 747 Posted May 11, 2021 Elizabeth (Josephine Tewson) is 90 as well! I wouldn't be surprised if they both outlive Daisy (Judy Cornwell), she retired 5 years ago in her 70's. That makes me think health problems. She looked fine but her voice sounded like she's missing all her teeth on last years Pointless.

Cerberus 302 Posted May 17, 2021 Saw her yesterday in To Sir, with Love, a film which I'd somehow managed to avoid watching until now. If you hadn't seen it you might think Lulu was the female star - she sings a lot, but the starring role among the girls was taken by the gorgeous Judy Geeson. I didn't recognise Patricia Routledge at first. She was a strikingly attractive woman in her late thirties. She'd have made an excellent Moneypenny I think. Another teacher was played by Geoffrey 'Catweazle' Bayldon.

Probably has still a few years to go at least, though I wouldn't be surprised if she made the front page next year. The discussion above about her KUA co-stars reminds me, when was the last time David Griffin (Emmet) was seen in public? He hasn't had any TV roles after 2005.
