7 pointsPlease don't recreate this thread again. Still, kinda crazy how Hillary Clinton's going to kill herself in 2020 through something she does in 20916.

3 pointsThird time I can think it happened as Phil and Liz were both on last year and Gerald and Betty Ford were both picked in 2005.

2 pointsI think this acting legend is now deserving of his own thread, based on the following from the FT in November 17 and due to the fact I have him on my Nags Head DP10 as well! Gatiss recognises someone at the door to the restaurant, a frail figure in a wheelchair, wearing a beanie. It’s Ian Holm, the 86-year-old actor who just three years ago was appearing as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit films. “He was brilliant,” says Gatiss, transfixed. https://www.ft.com/content/51d3c7e4-c8c2-11e7-ab18-7a9fb7d6163e He seems to now be in permanent retirement and IMBD lists no roles since the aforementioned Hobbit in 2014. Like Alan Rickman, I suspect many people will only realise just how fantastic an actor he was after he has departed.

2 pointsAlready have threads to discuss DL 2018 predictions. And Her Maj and Hillary aren't on this year's DL.

2 pointsRick Hall, American record producer, songwriter and owner of the FAME Studios, has died aged 85. He wrote songs for George Jones and Brenda Lee, whilst his recording studios were used by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, The Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Gregg Allman. Edit: Daily Mail, The Guardian, The Telegraph obituaries.

2 pointsMade a Venn-diagram over the three main types of deathpooling picks and how they intersect. Using this as a template, where do your picks fit in? Cancer mums: Those who are neither famous (in the traditional meaning of the word) nor old, but quite ill or even terminal. Obitability is a toss-up, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. List of the Lost: Those who are both old and ill, but lack the necessary fame to get obits when they do die. Theme team fillers: Similar to the above, except there are no known health issues (other than old age). Usually used to fill out remaining spots for theme teams. The worst kind of picks for ambitious deathpoolers. Olivia de Havilland: Famous old people that have no problems with their health. The kind pick that tends to stay on the DeathList for years and years by virtue of their fame. Non-serious picks, i.e. Bieber: Usually wishful thinking, and/or not really taking the competition seriously. Could also be part of some theme teams. DL-types: Look up the word "deathlisty" in the DeathList glossary lexicon at your local library, and this is what you will see: Someone who is both old enough, sick enough and famous enough to be a prime candidate for the committee. Title-winning picks: These are the ones that guarantee high scores by being terminally ill, relatively young and left a sufficient mark in Britain to get a write-up in newspapers such as BBC.

2 pointsMy view - this year All the Dead Pools have different rules and if you enter without reading them and carefully you probably won't win - for example I presumed (I'm an idiot) that Death Rowers were banned following last year but in actual fact rules have stayed the same so unless the three scheduled for January get Stays or Rescheduled then I'm not in with a chance. The RH rule is part of the rules of this pool. If no-one on this site knew that Cas Willow or Derek Dudley were dead by midnight on 31/12/17 then I think it's fair to say it was not widely known. Hence points awarded. The rules can't be changed mid competition. My view on the rule It's just making life difficult for Mary unnecessarily - if you have died in 2017 then you don't make the start line for 2018, it could be that simple. The fact that everyone (apart from Lardy) had entered by midnight on 30/12/17 means clearly nobody had cheated but imagine if, for example, Heef was the only person with a choice who had died on 30/12 and there was some random tweet in New Zealand about it. Then say death only became general public knowledge on 01/01. Clearly under the existing rule there is a possibility, as YW alludes to, of taking advantage. Unlikely but just unnecessary to have that loophole. My view on the final ruling Anyone who is prepared to run these pools for free for our amusement has my full support in any decision they make whether I agree with it or not.

2 pointsI’m gonna wait till after the final DDP “update” (quotes cause there’s no other hits this year) to calculate points. There was only one more hit after Michael, and that was Rose Marie. Some surprises to come...
-
2 pointsAye, your team held up well to my assessment that it was a strong team while using only reasonably famous names. It, Shaun's team, and The B-Team were the only top 20 finishes with no hits in the Obit Vault.

2 pointsMy thoughts... I am more optimistic Kirk Douglas: he doesn't look so bad to be 102. He is a legend of Hollywood... and of deathlist too. You can't drop him. Anyway I have the feeling this is his year. 80 % of chances to croak. Leah Bracknell: She survives 2017 and can't do the same again. A cert. 99% Herman Wouk: 103 year old in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank? This is his year. 95% Olivia de Havilland: mmmm not sure but she is too old. One between her and Vera Lynn will go. 50% Prince Philip: bad health for years. He's at the end in my view. His year. 90% Billy Graham: he doesn't want to go... or God doesn't want him, I don't know this. I just know that one between him and Kirk will go. 80% Betty White: mmmm I can't see her leaving us this year. 20% John McCain: nice choice. For me its a dead cert this year. 99% Linda Nolan: seems bad but i am not sure about her, let say 50% Lord Carrington: mmm not sure about him, but with 98 years old you can't live much longer. At least 40% Javier Perez de Cuellar: old, frail and in wheelchair, the boring pick it's at his last year in my view. 95% Pierre Cardin: i like this pick. One between him and Valery Giscard d'Estaing will go this year. 70% Stan Lee: some health issues and after the dead of his wife i think is a good pick. 60% Stirling Moss. Bad apparently with months in hospital. 80% Tessa Jowell: Another patient with Glioblastoma. A cert? 80% Doris Day: Old, but at that age a cold could be lethal. We need to have a litle bit of lucky to see her down... 40% Bob Dole: good choice. Chances he can go this year are high in my view. 70% Bob Barker: one of the Bob's will go for sure. This one is more unlikely. 30% Prunella Scales: not sure about her. Jimmy Carter: He looks much better than Bush Sr. And has beat cancer. Everything can happens with him. Undropable. 50% Leslie Phillips: he was between the most likely candidates to die last year. I think he can't survive this one. 95% Jill Gascoine: Late stages of Alzheimer's. Almost a cert for some people in the forum. Some possibilities in my opinion. 40% Vera Lynn: one between her and Olivia de Havilland will go. 50% Robert Mugabe: mmm iI'll say no. Bad people are hard to die. 15% George Bush Sr.: so many recovers at the hospital, so many years on the edge. With parkinsons, pneumonia,... Come on! This is last year in my opinion. 90% Charles Aznavour: mmm maybe , but unlikely in my view. 25% Henry Kissinger: a hit here would be lovely. As Mugabe, bad people are hard to die. Hope to be wrong 15% Honor Blackman: surprised of his inclusion. Not sure. Barbara Bush: she looks bad. If she croaks, her husband will follow her... or viceversa. Nice pick in my view. 85% Dick van Dyke: no comments . Stanley Baxter: No comments. Valery Giscard d'Estaing: I like this pick. Nice chances to croak in my view. 75% Mel Brooks: well, he is not the favourite of some. But he is old. Is not a cert anyways. 35% Benedict XVI: mmmm...could be his year. Could be not. Maybe? 50% Neil Simon: No comments June Brown: No comments Hosni Mubarak: same as Mugabe and Kissinger. Bad people are hard to die. 10% Sean Connery: a litle bit surprised of the inclusion on the list... he is not going anywhere in my view. 10% Louis Farrakhan: no comments Denis Norden: looks likely. 60% Ian St. John: i thought he was going to be dropped. 20% Jimmy Greaves: No comments. Valerie Harper: mmmm i can see her survive the year. Some chances in my view. 40% Clive James: High chances 75% Stephen Hawking: He has a few reasons to be on the list like Als, certain age,bad shape, but still... just few chances to die. 30% Ronnie Wood: i would prefer to see Keith Richards. 5% Olivia Newton-John: Metastatic cancer, I will say 60% Joni Mitchell: No comments Paul Gascoigne: surprised of his return. I would prefer much much more the inclusion of Pelè... 5% Mark E. Smith: no comments Overall I would say around 12-13 hits

2 pointsWith a glance over the teams announced here so far, and with some big teams not announced yet, here's my immediate gut feeling for a DDP 2018 top 10 from the forum alone: 1. DDT c 158 points 2. DI c 157 3. Dead Cow c 150 4. Joey c. 144 5. Rad c. 138 6. Toast c. 130 7. Engineer c. 124 8. Gcreptile c. 122 9. Eesti c 120 10. Sean c 112 So, if Cow isn't really a dark horse now (2nd in 2017), I guess Joey is your potential break out star if the cards all fall correctly. I like Toast's team though, that's a floor of circa 130 if only the people expected to die do ie Vervoort, Stiles, Srefansson, Miller, McCain, Jowell, James, Gilbert, Elias and Brackers. If Newton-John or Nolan's cancers spread, or Ricksen goes downhill quicker than I expect, or the likes of Herd and Greaves, that is a team with a right potential to crack the top 5, imo. Last year I did think Spade would run away with the DDP at this point but on retrospect: Sometimes, I accidentally see the bigger picture!

1 pointLard, maybe the internet world works like the real world sometimes? So if this person was new here, even then, said person may have good experience on some other forums/site as global mod/admin and they thought "this is someone we need on our team over here" you know, just like getting a high posistion in a company due to experience (even if its your first day there)
