Thread for John Williams, born 1932, not just any composer, but possibly the best-known film composer of all time (Even Morricone barely a tie?). He scored Star Wars, Jaws, Close Encounter of the Third Kind, three Harry Potter movies, Superman, Indiana Jones, Home Alone .. and many more... Sadly, he's been recently hospitalized and was forced to cancel an event: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-45965645 Note the ominous title: "A Celebration of John Williams In Concert". Concerts for November also cancelled. Also...hey committee!

She doesn’t have to be healthy to play in a movie. Karen Carpenter (as mentionned by Red Death) or Judy Garland were active right up to the end. If she has some drug or eating issues, it doesn’t necessarily prevent her from being active.

Well if you read this article, it claims Eastwood hasn't been photographed since February 2022 (wrong) and that he didn't attend this year's AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am (wrong). I guess the internet is broken over at RadarOnline's lying factory

Robert Walpole died on this day 278 years ago, aged 68. - Walpole was the fifth of nineteen children born to Robert Walpole Sr. and Mary Burwell. He was one of nine to survive infancy. - Walpole was first elected to Parliament in 1701, and his colleagues gave him the nickname "Robin". - In 1712, Walpole was impeached for bribery, and would be considered a political martyr by the Whigs. Walpole was found guily, expelled from Parliament, and spent six months in the Tower of London. Despite his expulsion, he was still well-liked enough to be voted back into office in 1713. - In 1721, Walpole became the first Prime Minister of Great Britain after showing his ability to get the nation out of the South Sea Company crash in 1720. - Walpole's main impact in politics was debt reduction- he introduced sinking funds, and avoided increased taxes by not getting King George II involved in the War of Polish Succession. - Walpole's popularity waned during the War of Jenkins' Ear, as he was seen as incapable of leading the conflict. - Walpole died from an untreated bladder stone that likely led to renal failure.

Odoacer died on this day 1530 years ago, aged 60. - It is unknown which Germanic tribe Odoacer was born into- some possibilities include the Rhutenes, Scirians, or Turcilingi. - Odoacer's name is believed to mean "watcher of the wealth". - Contrary to popular belief, Odoacer did not besiege the Western Roman Empire at first- he was a soldier in Rome's army, fighting against the Byzantine emperor Anthemius in 472. - Odoacer eventually turned against the commander-in-chief Orestes as he did not allow the foederati (Germanic Roman troops) to own land. - Odoacer's troops named him as king, and after capturing the city of Ravenna, emperor Romulus Augustulus (Orestes' son) abdicated, giving the crown to him. Odoacer spared Romulus due to his young age, and even rewarded him a pension before exiling him to Campania. - Zeno, the Byzantine emperor, saw Odoacer as a threat, and promised the Ostrogoths control of Italy if they removed him from power. In 489, their king Theodoric began the invasion, chasing him back to Ravenna. - Odoacer and Theodoric met on the Ides of March in 493 after the bishop of the city (Giovanni) arranged a treaty where they could rule together. While eating together, Theodoric murdered Odoacer and proclaimed himself king. Odoacer died on the 537th death anniversary of Julius Caesar- who also brought a new kind of reign to Italy.

On this day 67 years ago in 1956, American Olympic gold medallist and diver David Browning, often known by his nickname Skippy Browning, died aged 24 in a military plane crash in Kansas. He was on a test flight on a North American FJ Fury aircraft carrier. Lynne Thigpen died on this day 20 years ago, aged 54. - Thigpen's first role was in the musical Godspell, reprising her role in the 1973 film adaptation. She won a Tony Award in 1997 for her role as Judith Kaufman in An American Daughter. - In 1991, Thigpen became the announcer- known as "The Chief"- of the children's geography game show Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego. She would return as this role for its history-oriented spinoff Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego. - Perhaps her most well-known role was as Luna in Bear in the Big Blue House, who ended each episode by asking Bear about his day and sing the goodbye song with him. - Thigpen's death from a stroke led to Bear entering a three-year hiatus, and her character (Ella Mae Farmer) in The District was killed off. Thigpen was posthumously nominated for an Emmy for her role as Luna.

Wilbur Scoville died on this day 81 years ago, aged 77. - Scoville was a pharmacist, but he had an affinity for peppers. - In 1895, he wrote The Art of Compounding, in which he listed milk as an antidote to heat-related reactions from eating spicy peppers. - Scoville's most famous work came in 1912, when he devised a scale measuring said spiciness, based on the amount of capsaicin in the pepper. The units were named after him as well. - There is competition to breed peppers to top Scoville's chart. Among the contenders include the Dragon's Breath pepper (unofficially 2,480,000 Scoville units) and Pepper X (unofficially 3,180,000 Scoville units), both of which were first cultivated in 2017.

Biggie Smalls/The Notorious BIG died on this day 26 years ago, aged 24. - Biggie took his stage name from the character Calvin Lockhart played in Let's Do It Again. This led to a lawsuit where he had to sell his records as The Notorious BIG, but the name stuck with him. - Biggie was imprisoned in 1991 for dealing crack cocaine. He would continue to sell drugs until P. Diddy told him to stop. - Biggie's first demo tape was called Microphone Murderer. - Biggie married fellow Big Boy Records artist Faith Evans a few months after meeting her, and their son CJ would go on to portray his father (in his teenage years) in the 2009 biopic Notorious. - Shortly after the drive-by murder of his colleague and friend 2Pac, Biggie was involved in a car accident that temporarily forced him into a wheelchair (during the time he was working on his album Life After Death). - Only the final bullet in Biggie's shooting was fatal (it passed through his heart and left lung). - Biggie became the first singer to top the US charts posthumously ("Hypnotize" and "Mo Money Mo Problems") and would be the only one to do so until 2008 (Static Major as a featured artist on Lil Wayne's "Lollipop").

I notice DevonDeathTrip hasn't been here since he was on the receiving end of my massive rant a couple of months back. Oh well. I don't really want to spend too long going over old arguments again....... but..... (click here if you want to read what I think of that): Anyway. I think we could use an extra pair of hands when it comes to taking care of the annoying things like when people accidentally post in the wrong thread, threads that want renaming, etc. I would like to nominate themaninblack and/or Maryportfuncity to be given mod powers.
