4 pointsKing Edward VI died on this day 470 years ago, aged 15. - Edward was the first and only surviving son of Henry VIII, via his third wife Jane Seymour- his mom died from complications from his birth 12 days later. He immediately became heir apparent due to being male, superseding his older half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth; Mary was 21 years old and became his godmother. - Edward began his education when he was 6, learning foreign language, Bible studies, philosophy, and science. He developed a particular interest in cartography. - When Edward was 5, he was betrothed to his first cousin once removed Mary, Queen of Scots- she was just seven months old. This was done in an attempt to seek peace with Scotland to get them to unite with England, but when the Scottish regency renewed their alliance with the French, Henry VIII ordered an invasion- this lasted into Edward's reign, and is known as the "Rough Wooing". - Edward became king at the age of 9, which initiated a regency period led by his uncle Thomas Seymour, and then by John Dudley (the Duke of Northumberland). - In 1550, Edward would again be betrothed in marriage, this time to Elisabeth, the daughter of king Henry II of France. When Pope Julius III found out about this, he threatened to excommunicate both of them (this could've gone forward despite the threat, considering the Church of England had been established). - In January of 1553, Edward contracted tuberculosis- his doctors believed he had a tumor in his lung. He died after six months with the illness, and it is believed that he had suffered from measles and smallpox the year before, weakening his natural immunity. - In his will, Edward named his first cousin once removed Jane Grey as his successor- Jane was proclaimed queen four days after Edward's death, but was deposed after a nine-day reign once the Privy Council declared Edward's sister Mary as queen instead. Whether Jane counts as an English monarch remains disputed to this day.

1 pointThen fucking contextualise your posts rather than just copy and pasting articles. Lazy.

1 pointNow that we have an entry, I will post mine as well. This is an acceptable format: jacques delors/bobby shantz/dick van dyke/1925 (sub in mahathir mohamad) henry kissinger/harrison schmitt/hal linden/H jimmy carter/robert solow/eva marie saint/1924 politicians/ s /actors I didn't think this was likely, but only a few entries in and already there is a redundancy conflict. After posting my team, I went to my PM and found that another player had submitted the same trio I used for politicians! Eff me! So I am swapping out jacques delors for mahathir mohamad. I was lucky to find another name to fit both categories on short notice, and not have to restructure my whole grid. Carry on . . . . .

1 pointI have made it 8 categories because I fully intended for writers/authors/journalists to be there. Also, royalty and politicians fall under the world leaders category, which I have amended above to label "politicians" instead of political leaders. I am going to keep the categories at 8 because part of the design of this pool is to be creative within the restrictions of the categories. I don't want so much leeway that we include the very marginally famous (or totally nonfamous), because they have a cancer blog or are a relative of someone who . . . . . blah blah etc. Maybe we can expand things if there are future editions. Let's see how this goes for now.

1 pointTL;DR summary: if the monthly hit rate is greater than or equals 0.7 hits/day (21 hits/month), or the yearly rate stays above 0.8 we are in for a record year. Yearly rate = total hits on the day/day of year out of 365. For example, 30 June hits were 161 and 30 June is day 181 of 365. So 161/181 = 0.890. I'm blaming both @YoungWillz and @Gooseberry Crumble for giving me ideas. It is just over half the year and despite @Gooseberry Crumble lamenting missed picks, this year has had a great first half. And I'll make a prediction - it will be a record setting year with 290 hits. As I write on 5 July, there are 164 hits. As of 30 June at 161 hits, it is the best performing year so far compared to 2020, 2021 and 2022. I've used these years as the spread of total hits is low: 2020 (278), 2021 (275), 2022 (280). Kudos for precision deadpoolers. First off, why such a good tally end of June? Two reasons - no May or June slump in hits that happened every year 2020-2022. And this is despite having the worst 31 January tally in 2023 vs 2020-2022. I've hidden the maths below so as not to trigger the forum users. I'm confident in this prediction. And I'll try to update it as the results come in. Always happy to hear any comments, suggestions, why you hated your maths teacher, etc. Edit: If you really want a bumper year, find QOs for the LotL; I suspect that the low number of them is partly a reason for the success. Also, why call out @YoungWillz? The knack of finding QOs weeks and months later made me realize that my initial counts were inaccurate, b/c ofc @YoungWillz had turned it up and it was put in its correct date. Dedication to the cause.

1 pointThink this is the place for all the Kent clan? So I'll put it here rather than the Royal Family thread. Spent yesterday sat on Centre Court at Wimbledon and Prince Michael of Kent was in attendance along with, I believe, his daughter. Looked very frail. Walked with a stick, was very slow climbing and descending the steps and used the hand rail as well as his stick for support. Should've taken a photo, didn't. Tried to find a photo, haven't. Which maybe tells its own story...

1 pointEccentric, controversial, loved, hated Finnish poet, writer Miki Liukkonen dead at 33. Death cause not mentioned but he had/had suffered from BPD, anorexia and depression. Possibly Finland's most famous living poet before his death, atleast according to himself - from a 2015 interview: "I am Finland's most famous poet as Tommy Tabermann (1947-2010) is dead. I don't know if I'm the greatest, but atleast I'm the most famous."

1 pointJose Sarney, former President of Brazil, has made a rare appearance with Lula: Frail but doesn't look bad for someone who's survived pleural effusion atleast twice and was very close to dying ten years ago.

1 pointThis one just gets more and more bizarre as well. I've used all the alternative spellings on her discogs page and nothing comes up between 1931 and 1945 in the birth index... She clearly wasn't born under this name. I'll add "1936 or 1940" to page 1 in the meantime.
