American politician George Wallace died on this day 25 years ago, aged 79. He served as the 45th governor of Alabama for four terms. He is notoriously remembered for his staunch segregationist and populist views. During Wallace's tenure as Governor of Alabama, he promoted "industrial development, low taxes, and trade schools." Wallace sought the United States presidency as a Democratic Party candidate three times, and once as an American Independent Party candidate, being unsuccessful each time. Wallace opposed desegregation and supported the policies of "Jim Crow" during the Civil Rights Movement, declaring in his 1963 inaugural address that he stood for "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever."

I know some of you won't be glad to see another thread created but I won't stop advocating for her inclusion in next year list. One of the most influential french political figure of the XXth and 00's still alive. In failing health for a decade now, too frail to attend her husband funeral in 2019. Last public appearance was in 2019 when she pronounced a speech for the inauguration of a "Jacques and Bernadette Chirac street" in Brive-la-gaillarde : wheelchairbound, can't even take the veil of the street sign down by herself, has difficulties talking etc (here, around 14min) The only news that we have of her are from her family telling us that she's "on the margins of society" and "very weak". Surely qualifies in term of notoriety and age. The fact she's still alive is a miracle. Her in 2017. Already looked really frail

Kudos to him for knowing when to give up power and bow out. He likely would have faced a fierce primary, but I think he would have won. If only he had been the 2016 nominee...

Johnny Cash died on this day 20 years ago, aged 71. - Cash's birth name was the initials "JR"- his parents couldn't compromise on naming him "John" or "Ray" (considering the order, it seems that John won). Because he was unable to use initials in the military, he legally changed his name to "John R. Cash". - During his service, Cash was reportedly the first American to receive the news of Joseph Stalin's death (given to him via Morse code, likely from a mole in Russia). - During his career's high point in the '60s, Cash was addicted to amphetamines- a short time in jail got him sober, but he was reusing them by 1977, and completely dependent on them by 1989. - Cash was 1/4th Cherokee, and as such was an activist for Native American rights. He would be made an honorary member of the Seneca Tribe in 1968. - Cash made a few TV appearances- most notably on four episodes of Sesame Street, and as a talking coyote in Homer's hallucination in a 1997 episode of The Simpsons: - Late in his career, Cash would be known to cover songs (primarily from rock and grunge bands)- most notably his swan song, his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt": - Cash would be diagnosed with multiple system atrophy in 1997, initially misdiagnosed as Parkinson's disease, and given 18 months to live. The following year, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia, and in 2000 would make his debut on the DeathList. Cash ended up dying from complications of his diabetes about four months after his wife June's death; he would be the 13th death of the (then-record-breaking) 2003 list (the last of four within a week).

Cliff Robertson died on this day 12 years ago, aged 88. - One of Robertson's first acting roles was a title role- that being the main character of the 1953 sci-fi series Rod Brown of the Rocket Rangers. - In 1955, Robertson made his film debut in Picnic, and would star alongside Joan Crawford in his next film, Autumn Leaves. - Robertson starred as a young John F. Kennedy in the 1963 biopic PT 109- he was the real JFK's personal choice due to his youthful looks yet mature acting. - Robertson won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1969 for starring in the previous years' Charly. - During the '70s and '80s, Robertson would return to TV, most notably portraying Buzz Aldrin in the 1976 made-for-television movie Return to Earth and as William Martin in Washington: Behind Closed Doors. - Robertson's career would see a resurgence when he played Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy- 2007's Spider-Man 3 was his final film role: - Outside of acting, Robertson was an avid aviation enthusiast, owning several planes and competing in hot-air balloon races. He would help organize airlifts into Nigeria during its 1969 civil war, and Ethiopia in 1978 to combat famine. - Speaking of his planes- Robertson was flying 7500 feet over New York City when 9/11 happened (about 6000 feet above the attacks), and was ordered to land immediately. - Robertson died the day after he turned 88.

Leni Riefenstahl was born in Berlin and died at the age of 101 in Pöcking 20 years ago. She was a German filmmaker, representative of the ideals of Nazi aesthetics. Her most famous works are the propaganda films she made for the German Nazi Party. Ostracized by the film industry after the war, she became a photographer and diver. Leni celebrated her 101st birthday at a hotel in Feldafing, close to her home, and her health rapidly deteriorated thereafter. Leni died in her sleep on September 8, 2003, at her home in Pöcking, Germany, aged 101. In her obituary, it was said that Leni was the last famous figure from the Nazi era in Germany to die. Leni Riefenstahl – Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre (wikipedia.org) Louise Currie was born in Oklahoma City and died in Santa Monica, California at age 100 10 years ago, Her first film was in 1940 when she starred in Billy the Kid Outlaws. In 1941 she starred in The Adventures of Captain Marvel alongside Tom Tyler, and that same year she had an uncredited role in the classic film Citizen Kane.

Other than the band he was in - The Animals - and some successful solo work the obits will play up one significant story. The Animals' world-wide smash with their cover of House of the Rising Sun has a writing credit on the label making clear it's traditional but arranged by Price. Long story short, he cleaned up financially on that and the others - notably singer Eric Burdon who'd first heard the song in a folk club and suggested to the rest of the band they record it - were pissed off as a result. We're talking sales on an epic scale including #1 in several countries (UK and US amongst them), and so the financial fall out was also epic. They buried their differences, notably in the early 80s , so's they could milk the money from a reunion album and tour, but only Price thinks he was fully deserving of being the sole arranger. Apart from anything else it was Burdon who first suggested they do it, and the bolshy Burdon who piled the pressure on producer Mickie Most to come and see them play it live so he could get a sense of the reaction it got as the closing song in their set as they supported Chuck Berry. So, Price might have done some studio trickery and figured out where the various instruments went on the floor but they'd - more or less - nailed their version before they cut the song and they recorded the whole thing in around 15 mins.

Definitely not a mobile as he was, sadly. He attended the unveiling of a plaque for Eddie Cochran at Bristol Hippodrome on 22 April using two canes and a walker with a seat. Next to him with the purple jumper is Vince Eager (83). I remember reading at the time that legendary drummers Brian Bennett (83) and Clem Cattini (85) were going to be there, but it looks like they weren't.
