8 pointsLet's apply the logic of those Brand conspiracy nuts who casually dismiss women's complaints to another couple of cases, shall we? You know, just to see how that plays out when it isn't necessarily victim focussed. Case #1 "Not one case has been brought in a court of law convicting Jimmy Savile of any of the things he is alleged to have done. It's a disgrace this beloved entertainer's name has been sullied by these totally unproven accusations from people who waited until he was dead before coming out of the woodwork. Until he is exhumed and put on trial and convicted, he is totally innocent!" Case #2 "Who the fuck does Nicky Campbell think he is? He is all like 'boo hoo, I was abused at school'. I mean for gawd's sake, this stuff happened over 35 years ago! Not only that, but he didn't stop going to school, did he? Kept going day in, day out, though he claims he saw sexual abuse and was rag dolled. C'mon, that teacher was well known at that school for beating up kids and fingering them anyway - common knowledge. This is an attack on teachers everywhere! That poor educator is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law! How dare Campbell put that poor man through a trial by media, using his position to make such accusations?" Anybody see the double standards being applied here? Look I don't know what the truth is in Brand's case. All I do know is there is a bandwagon against women who step forward in these cases - especially when the authorities in charge have done nothing in response to complaints, or people feel they have to do the bidding of the "star". I don't advocate women getting special treatment - I advocate that they get the same treatment as men.

2 pointsJames Garfield died on this day 142 years ago, aged 49. - Garfield's first job was on a canal boat, which ended after six weeks when he got malaria. Other careers Garfield got into before politics included teaching, law, and ministerial work. - Garfield was a Civil War veteran, and rose through the Union army ranks to become a brigadier general. He would be elected to Congress in 1862, and left combat in December of 1863. - During his time in the House of Representatives, Garfield advocated for Blacks receiving the right to vote, which president Andrew Johnson opposed. The two of them were once friends, but Garfield stopped considering him one, perceiving Johnson as an opium addict. - Garfield was chosen to replace Ohio senator John Sherman after his resignation in 1880- however, Garfield was elected president, and never became a US senator. - Garfield barely won the popular vote in the 1880 election- he got just under 2,000 more votes than the Democratic nominee, Winfield Hancock. - One of the things Garfield managed to do was appoint Stanley Matthews (NOT the soccer player) to the Supreme Court as an Associate Justice. - In July of 1881, Garfield would be shot by a man who believed he owed him a diplomatic position. For the last 79 days of his life, he was bedridden, while his doctors worsened his situation- they didn't wash their hands, and one punctured his liver. If modern medical practices were used, Garfield likely would have lived. - One of Garfield's great-great-grandchildren is Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering. (He's not related to Andrew Garfield, however- Andrew's last name was anglicized from "Garfinkel".)
