I see the members with terminal brainrot (mostly deadboy999, who hasn't made a smart contribution to this site in his life) are getting a frothy cock at the thought of entering a debate about Derek Chauvin. Christ. A murderer got stabbed in prison and you're finding a way to soften his actions that lead him to be there. Just because his victim had a criminal record doesn't make him any less of a murdering shithead, that killed someone on a busy street in broad daylight if you need reminding. Hopefully more shanking to come!

Wrong, yes. Should it garner sympathy? Of course not. That's exactly what gammony white men people are trying to do when they make out he's a martyr of injustice. *exits thread to skim through 6394 of the irrelevant obits Old Crem has decided to harass us with today*

Betico Croes died on this day 37 years ago, aged 48. - Born in the Aruban town of Santa Cruz, Croes entered politics in 1967 as a member of the island council. He would serve in this role until resigning in 1970. - Croes would found the pro-independence People's Electoral Movement party in 1971, and the party won a majority of Aruba's seats in the Netherlands Antilles parliament. - Croes would start planning Aruba's independence from the Netherlands by designing its flag, coat of arms, and co-writing its anthem in 1976: The following year, he organized an independence referendum which the Dutch government considered illegitimate. 95% of voters were in favor of independence. - Following a general strike, Croes managed to start dialogues with Dutch PM Joop den Uyl, and it was agreed that Aruba would become a constituent country of the Netherlands on New Year's Day 1986, with a potential independence referendum in 1995. Afterwards, Croes would kickstart Aruba's economy by investing in tourism. - The day before Aruba became a constituent country, Croes was in a car crash that put him into a coma which he never woke up from, dying eleven months later. The Aruban independence movement soon fell apart, and the island remains under Dutch jurisdiction to this day. - He is remembered in Aruba as the "Libertador", having his birthday (January 25) being made an island holiday, and several urban centers and statues dedicated to him.

A little update during this well-deserved November break. The big hit this update was Johnny Ruffo, the actor/singer from Australia. The curse of Home and Away strikes once more. He's one of the biggest hits this year, lots of players score and he's one of the youngest hits in the game. Some people, including me, score joker points. We've had two DeathList hits that also score here, Joss Ackland and Rosalynn Carter. Well done to the pickers. Suzanne Somers was a unique hit for etib80, congratulations! I have to admit, neither of her big shows ring any bell with me. Then, as mentioned above, Joan Jara gives Cpt Hemlock another unique hit. The yahoo obit has since been followed by other QOs. She was an artist-y figure, acting/dancing, turned political activist/wife of chilean labor hero Victor Jara. This already seems to be it. Not much in almost a whole month. The scoreboard shows me attacking the top with just 4 pts behind. But is there still a unique pick for me left in the game, or is this minor difference going to remain? In other news, expect the new thread soon. Rank Team Score 1 Banana 1161 2 gcreptile 1157 3 JoeyRuss 1059 4 RadGuy 1022 5 Cpt. Lindsey Graham once said that conservatives don't create enough angry, white men to stay competetive politically. I have a feeling that some people just talk about this to make some white men angry.

Cuban dictator, revolutionary and politician Fidel Castro died on this day 7 years ago, aged 90. He served as the leader of Cuba from 1959 to 2008, serving as the prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and president from 1976 to 2008. Ideologically a Marxist–Leninist and Cuban nationalist, he also served as the first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1965 until 2011. Under his administration, Cuba became a one-party communist state; industry and business were nationalized, and socialist reforms were implemented throughout society. After Batista's overthrow in 1959, Castro assumed military and political power as Cuba's prime minister. The United States came to oppose Castro's government and unsuccessfully attempted to remove him by assassination, economic embargo, and counter-revolution, including the Bay of Pigs Invasion of 1961. Countering these threats, Castro aligned with the Soviet Union and allowed the Soviets to place nuclear weapons in Cuba, resulting in the Cuban Missile Crisis—a defining incident of the Cold War—in 1962. Adopting a Marxist–Leninist model of development, Castro converted Cuba into a one-party, socialist state under Communist Party rule, the first in the Western Hemisphere. Policies introducing central economic planning and expanding healthcare and education were accompanied by state control of the press and the suppression of internal dissent. Abroad, Castro supported anti-imperialist revolutionary groups, backing the establishment of Marxist governments in Chile, Nicaragua, and Grenada, as well as sending troops to aid allies in the Yom Kippur, Ogaden, and Angolan Civil War. These actions, coupled with Castro's leadership of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1979 to 1983 and Cuban medical internationalism, increased Cuba's profile on the world stage. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, Castro led Cuba through the economic downturn of the "Special Period", embracing environmentalist and anti-globalization ideas. In the 2000s, Castro forged alliances in the Latin American "pink tide"—namely with Hugo Chávez's Venezuela—and formed the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas. In 2006, Castro transferred his responsibilities to Vice President Raúl Castro, who was elected to the presidency by the National Assembly in 2008.
