Ukraine's pretty good. They played a strong qualifying round. Spain rarely plays well in international tournaments, but they have a few strong players. If I was made to wager a few Euro's on the match I'd bet on Ukraine.

 

Shevchenko's a great player. Ukraine would certainly be hampered by his absence, but their team is strong on all positions, so I expect them to reach the second round.

 

For the rest: the French suck. I hope they go home without scoring a goal. Again.

Seeing as you speak Arabic, I think it might be better to go round saying you are of Tunisian or Saudi ancestry, because the Ukraine were abysmal. Couldn't defend at set pieces, ill-disciplined, no imagination up front & Shevchenko looked far from 100%. Thoroughly second-rate. They can blame heat or the referee, but really, there were no excuses for losing 4-0.

 

Though, with £140 coming my way, if the Ukraine go out in the group stages, I am slightly biased against them, I admit. (and a red card helps no end towards that)

I'm going to stick with Ukrainian, but tell everyone that I've never heard of this "football" sport and wouldn't know anything about my national team.

 

In all fairness, the loss should have been 3-0. I hope that it doesn't come back to bite them in the ass (doubtful given today's shameful display).

I heard on the news that a specialist flag making company in England had done thousands of pounds worth of orders for Scotland including one bar kitting itself out completely in the colours of England's opponents for each match. They'd taken thousands of pounds on Trinidad and Tobago flags alone.

 

Tesco in Scotland are also having to order sh*t-loads of tropical fruit drinks and rum, taking some from North of England warehouses to meet demand.

 

Meanwhile - in Cumbria - the England support is solid and nobody's missing the rum when we've got plenty of beer!

 

2 or 3 nil to England I reckon, tense start, we'll come good at the end.

Personally, I can't understand the 'Jason Scotland' hype.

I don't support any team in the world cup. If I were to support England, I would regret it if they did actually win because of their shameless boastfulness.

Indeed, the Germans feel for 1945, what us Scots feel about 1966 - we will never hear the end of it.

 

Lastly, if England do wins the World Cup, I fear that my worst nightmare will become a reality...Sir David and Lady Victoria Beckham. It doesn't bear thinking about, does it?

Going down to 10 men after the most innocuous of short pulls and going 3-0 down from the resulting penalty didn't help matters much, but I agree Schvenko looked about as effective as Ronaldo the other night. I cannot understand this huge inferiority complex about England north of the border. I remember supporting Scotland in the 74 and 78 World Cups. Everybody in the English bars and pubs got behind the Scots and we were pretty delerious when Archie Gemmill scored his famous goal.

 

The same applied to Ireland in 1994. The English were cheering them on all the way. Sure I want England to win. But if England can't win I want Scotland, Ireland or (hard, this one) Wales to win. This attitude of Scots supporting "any team playing England" doesn't make sense to me. But I agree the English do harp on too much about 1966. I'm sorry about Culloden, I really am, but Bonnie Price Charlie was a French git who'd have done nothing for Scotland as all those Scots who fought on the English side knew only too well.

 

Another thing: it was the Scots who wrecked the home internationals and that was a great shame.

So does this mean I need no longer feel guilty for stuffing the Scots in 1745? That's a relief. I had always associated the bayonette wielding redcoats with the English and the kilted nutters ripped through by grapeshot with the Scots. Glad I can rest easy now.
