Certainly a distinctly unhealthy look.

85 today :birthday:

In 4 days 70 trophies and personal items will be putting up for auction...

" Auctioneer Graham Budd said Mr Piggott had reached 'that stage in his life where he has accumulated a wealth of stuff from his career and is sorting out what to keep and what to let go'."

Ja ja...

Not that many flat jockeys make it to 85. His first Derby was in 1954. Not that many people who were famous then still alive.

Actually a lot of them live well into their 80s.

Joe Mercer's still around at 86.  Geoff Lewis is 84.  Wally Swinburn's in his 80s.

I just looked up Willie Snaith to find that he died last year, at 91.  Most people probably never heard of him.

The fact is that there are lots of jockeys who are largely unknown to the general public.  Very few achieve fame outside the racing industry.

Had no idea Wally Swinburn was still alive so thanks for that. He's easily survived his son sadly.

Jimmy Lindley's still alive as far as I know, he'd be about the same age as Lester.  He worked for the BBC after retiring as a jockey, a very articulate and intelligent commentator.

Jimmy Lindley born May 16 1935.

I think "Jokeypedia" is brilliant. I'm surprised it's not been picked up before  now.

Lester is famously tight-fisted so he will make that last. :D

So, can't say I've taken huge interest in the man but...

He's still married but long separated and he lives in Switzerland with his partner. So, presumably, this sale gets assets off his hand and beyond the reach of his wife and moves cash to the kind of opaque accounting that allows him or his partner to protect it in the event of his death.

In other words, the odds might have come in just ahead of the DDP Stakes 2021

Sold his trophies and other memorabilia for €112,000. Perhaps, he’ll want to stay alive now to use the money.

He's not going to be on the bread line. One of his daughters is Maureen Haggas who is married to one of the most successful flat trainers there is in William Haggas.

Report of the death of sometime champion amateur jockey and then trainer John Sutcliffe, aged 81:

As it says above, Lester Piggott's best man in 1960, so let's have a swatch at that day:

This should be in the racing thread as it has nothing to do with Lester.

As an aside, I used to know the person who tweeted that.

With Frankie Dettori last weekend. I'd leave him off 2022 based on this.

Colour on his left hand...circulation could be better or - perhaps best guess - he's spent a lot of time outside in cold air

"Hopefully, he'll pull through."

Not quite the message of optimism there from the son in law.
