A great pioneer. She was much more than a simple athlete.

Carmen Valero was a two-time world cross country champion in 1976 and 1977.

She won 25 Spanish titles.

Cross country, 800m, 1500m, 3000m... 15 national records among those distances.

One of the best Spanish athletes of all time.

I didn't know she was so bad after a massive stroke.

She'd have been a great choice for Alt Obituaries and Hartlepool.

But more remarkably, in the same Games, she won a bronze medal in the Exhibition Mixed Doubles with her husband, French Pierre Darmon.

 
I don’t think it is that common that a husband and wife win a medal competing together.
I don’t see another example, apart from Swiss couple Hermann de Pourtalès and Hélène de Pourtalès who won gold and silver medals in sailing at the 1900 Games. Hélène was the first ever woman to win a gold medal.

I can’t think of any either. Several same sex married couples through in team events.

Richard Thornton, who made the 1980 U.S. Olympic men's swim team but never got to compete because of the boycott of the Moscow games, has died. He was 65. Thornton later became a swim coach, renown in the Bay Area of California.

I wonder if Natalie Steward will get an obit. She's Zimbabwean by nationality that so happened she chose to represent GB. Last time we heard about her is in 1962 where she went back to Zimbabwe. Considering a lot White Zimbabweans have left since 1980, we don't know if she's still in Zimbabwe or have left.

She is not dead, but Olympic Medalist Mary Lu Retton had a major health scare where she had a rare pneumonia that almost cost her her life. She was on the Today Show talking about it.  She is still on oxygen.  Not saying she is going to die.  By God's Grace I pray she pulls through and makes a complete recovery.  Just thought it was interesting news on an Olympic athlete, and I was not sure this was the place to post or not.  If there was a different thread I should have put it my apologies.

Omg, that is a shock ! I had a big crush on him a few years ago, I just googled him a few days ago while talking with friends… I don’t know many sportsman, even less in athletism, it’s weird to see that
