At the age of 28, Lenczyk ended his football playing career and began working as a coach, Lenczyk coached several teams in southeastern Poland, before finding work at Wisła Kraków in 1975, where he was assistant. The following year he became coach of Wisła's first team, winning the league title in the 1977–78 season. Additionally, Lenczyk's Wisła reached the quarter-finals of the 1978–79 European Cup, defeating Club Brugge and Zbrojovka Brno, only to lose to runners-up Malmö. He was Polish Coach of the Year in 1990 and 2006 being the most recent season-winning coach of that award to die, before the most recent season to lose the coach was 98, Janusz Wójcik died in 2017.
