When I was a child I was told that it was about the Gunpowder Plot, in which Guy Fawkes had tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

Because my Dad was always moaning about the Government, I assumed that we were celebrating the fact that someone had had a go

It was years before I realised that we were supposed to be celebrating the plot being foiled.

To mark the 400th anniversary in 2005, Richard Hammond made a programme called The Gunpowder Plot: Exploding The Legend, whereby they reconstructed the Houses of Parliament building as it was in 1605 and then blew it up using gunpowder.
