Stephen Darby update at the 5-year-mark:

Still very positive. And he was only 29 when diagnosed, so, extremely young. The younger you are, the slower MND seems to move.

He went on Holiday with his wife to Abu Dhabi a few weeks back. Obviously still fit enough to travel and cope with it all.

Finnish politician Antero Laukkanen makes one last appearance at parliament, short of breath with what seems to be a mobility scooter next to his chair but still able to talk quite clearly.

Another politician with ALS is Torao Tokuda, had it for around a decade now if he hasn't died off-radar sometime recently.

Antero Laukkenen in hospice now

Stephen Darby has fallen twice this year according to his foundations Instagram page.

Darby in a video here. Now mostly wheelchair bound and definitely struggling to speak now. I think he'll still see 2025, but he's clearly on the downhill slope.

Rob Burrow has been ‘surprised’ with his CBE by the Prince of Wales.

The fact they have presented the medal so quickly suggests it’s not just for the Facebook likes…

He met Princess Anne yesterday at an event. Still well enough then to go out in Public.

Darby, Rob Burrow and Marcus Stewart in a photo here: - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-merseyside-68647460

Stewart looks alright, Darby wheelchair bound... Rob Burrow - looks utterly terrible. I'd be shocked if he makes it to 2025.

I wonder if that’s what did him in?

Well that. is a bugger.

I nip out to the shops and come back to this.

Needless to say, he was on my Poker Team, so in comes a sub and I'll pick another.

RIP Rob, inevitable though it was.

I wouldn't necessarily say that this is sad as much as it is a relief, because the guy clearly had no quality of life.

There are not many people who would have fought such a dreadful disease with such resilience, keeping such a positive outlook and raising awareness in spite of how much of a strain it was. A true inspiration, and deserved every bit of plaudit that he got. Rest easy dude.

Very sad indeed. RIP Rob.

we should remember that he had a wonderful yet horribly short adult life prior to his diagnosis where he was a sporting legend with hero status doing something he loved and from what I have seen on the documentaries married a wonderful person too and had a fabulous friend in Kevin Sinfield.

None of this changes the horrible way he died but there is a life there to be celebrated too - he should not be defined by MND.

He was discussed in The Sunday Times this morning and the comment was made that his condition had got so bad that he couldn't even blink.

Yeah, seriously, incredibly brave in the circumstances, a truly horrible medical condition.

That's a big DDP hit, 23 teams have him as a joker.
