From the various articles I've read, it is something like 15 or 20 times more likely in those who have played rugby in particular, and less elevated in certain footballers. I believe it has something to do with concussions more than heading the ball.

And...if the person concerned is 5 foot 5 inches and regularly colliding with big guys up to and including those a full 12 inches taller...

Probably not a comfortable conversation to be having this week but doubtless someone will present that argument eventually

Another politician with ALS is Torao Tokuda, had it for around a decade now if he hasn't died off-radar sometime recently.

Torao Tokuda (Japanese wiki page) is apparently still alive at 86 and undergoing treatment at the same Kamakura hospital where terrorist Satoshi Kirishima was arrested earlier this year. He has barely made any appearances since 2014, but I managed to find an image of him from 2019:

Diagnosed in 2002. Makes me wonder, are there slower variants or has he simply been very "lucky"?

Didn't know whether to put this here or on strange things on the internet thread but the lady who has done this has previously done some impressive work but I am not quite sure about this one

Gutted to hear that. He was an inspirational player in his day for my county, who I remember watching during his county career. His career was also sadly cut short, as his life will be.

Euan MacDonald MBE is still alive. As far as I know mentioned on these forums twice, first on page 9 of the Rugby Players thread when he met Joost van der Westhuizen in 2013 and picked once in Death By Numbers over a year ago.

Euan MacDonald reportedly dead: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cwy585kdx7ko

Brian Wallach (wiki), a businessman and lawyer turned ALS advocate who has never been mentioned on the forum before, has been suffering from the disease since 2017 when he was given 6 months to live. He recently appeared at the Democratic Nation Convention. Independent.

After 6+ years of having ALS he doesn't look like he'll be troubling us just yet, but deserves a DeathList introduction.

David Lawrence has just been on BBC News (link).

He is to breathing quite heavily and his speech has quite clearly declined. It seems as though the disease has taken control quite rapidly considering it's only been 3 months since his diagnosis.

He'll be alright for a while yet I reckon.

Yes, looks like a much slower onset. No really noticeable decline 2 years after diagnosis.

Even by his own admission, he's fairly lucky in that regard.

A GoFundMe has been launched for the former German Under-19 Women's international Irini Ioannidou (33) after she was diagnosed with ALS.

A midfielder with FCR Duisburg and SGS Essen before retiring at FC Koln, she was at Duisburg when they won two DFB Pokals and the UEFA Women's Cup, now the UEFA Women's Champions League but was a bit part player.

I've had Steve Gleason on my personal top 50 for longer than I've posted on this site, but you have to admire this guy's spirit.  He had an accident but is still ticking.
