Lafaucheuse 4,046 Posted July 24, 2023 +1 for my shadow list and countless lists over the pools. Didn’t know Who he was as he was mostly a uk-centric personality though

YoungWillz 21,044 Posted July 24, 2023 A voice like double cream on a warm apple pie. His illness etched on his face many times, he still wanted to report to the nation. He WILL be missed. RIP.

Redrumours 861 Posted July 24, 2023 At last I'm on a charge Tony Bennett and now George Alagiah takes me to 5 hits.
Youth in Asia 1,087 Posted July 24, 2023 Another hit - can finally jump ahead of those annoying theme teams
Grimgrass 514 Posted July 24, 2023 Alagiah's death means 2023 will be the first year since 2014 the biggest DDP hit isn't a hit for the DL. Only name on more teams than him is James Whale, who isn't on the DL either.

Is it because he simply wasn't a name known outside of the UK?
RoverAndOut 4,746 Posted July 24, 2023 Huge loss, he was so great at his job. Consummate professional, throughout his illness too. Rest in Peace, George.

That has never stopped the committee, this years list has Pete Murray who I doubt many people know outside of the UK.

Surely his TOTP work made him notable enough... As for the subject of this thread, my best guess is the committee decided that considering he had lived for so long with a complex diagnosis, they might be able to hold off for another year...

His upbringing, his battle against racism and being a migrant, his outstanding reporting (I always bemoaned the fact he became a newsreader as it took him away from the reporting) and his utterly dignified fight against cancer, make him a very, very worthy man in my eyes. Brilliant wordsmith, a brilliant man, rest well George.

jd24fan 78 Posted July 24, 2023 I didn't know much about George but it's a total shame. What a class act, in how he handled his fight, still wanting to work despite all his problems and setbacks, and was very positive during his whole ordeal. I'm sure the BBC will have a whole special about his life and legacy.
