Oh man... Will you stop banging on about the next round. Is there - like - a Europa Cup equivalent for the rest of us?
  2. 2 points
That'll be for next year as I feels it unfair on folk to change the rules now. (Specifically folk who might have had different results in the last round or what not.) It'll be getting changed for 2018, should we reach that point! I try to be fair about it. For example, gcreptile's Trinidadian historian (I forget the name), I'd never heard of, but clearly he had some renown of sorts before death as an academic. Whereas coma victim Joe Publics have no claims to fame whatsover.

Actually the timing of The Cup is about perfect and IMHO should be this time every year. If it was later in the year then the true contenders for DDP glory would be loathe to enter and disclose all their secret golden nuggets.

I just wanted to distinguish them from the aliens who want to devour our nubile virgins or enslave us to mine out the core of the planet.

Bringing @Davey Jones' Locker Valerian discussion into this thread. I think the film is on dodgy ground. If fans of the original like DJL are upset then they are not going to go and I do not think there is enough in that trailer to convince me that this is worth spending my money on. Like John Carter I will probably wait and watch it on a plane or on DVD. I actually quite liked John Carter despite its linearity but I had not forked out £30 to take the family to see it which may have reduced my expectations. My daughter is boycotting the Ghost in the Shell movies because it has been Americanised and the same goes for the up coming Death Note movie. and another thing while I am ranting why do we even need a Beauty and the Beast remake. The original animated version is the closest Disney came to perfection and imo it should have beaten Silence of the Lambs to the Best Picture Oscar surely remakes should be those films that came close but no cigar. Not just a cynical marketing ploy.

    'Authoritative' sounds close enough.

Ah well, Life is debauched. After all, Marlene Dietrich was a damned fine actress who frequented Wiemar Germany drag clubs, once plotted to murder Hitler, drank like a newt, and was a promiscuous bisexual (allegedly seeing to both Gary Cooper and Greta Garbo, among many others). You know what that makes her? Fucking awesome, imo. Sorry, got completely distracted there...

Possible famous last words but I'd be less surprised to see Skinner go first, of the two. He has had cancer/heart issues in the past, and had some health issues a year or two back as well.

Well, now I'm just waiting for the shock Morano/Hamilton 31st March double hit and the subsequent "Better than Barcelona/PSG" T-shirts...

Me too but I have had some massive literary misses in the past few weeks. Dexter, Walcott, Storey

I only got David Storey's Saville out of the library on Tuesday. Funny how coincidences go. Looks like it hadn't been checked out since 2004. One of only 8 Bookers I've got left to read now. Currently working through Barry Unsworth's Sacred Hunger A good number of those Booker winners have died since 2012 - Unsworth, Brookner, Gordimer, Berger and now Storey. A good number of elderly authors left though - Byatt, Naipaul, Lively, Keneally. Recent winners have been a bit younger. Can't see DBC Pierre, Catton, Beattie, James or Flanagan.

So, sent a team just in case I get a miracle last min hit or win the toss. Change of tack with this team. Gone very mainstream. Figure that it's been so quiet with big name deaths that we are due a glut of them. This could be bought on by the oldies celebrating spring, and the survival of another winter, and over exuberating themselves into the grave. very bloody scientific...not !

Savident - well, old, overweight, not generally well and seemed like a passabe wild card in ten nailed on certainties, or summat. Feel free to play him in the next round

What is her medical condition? Actually, one thing that actuallydid impress me about the new films is that they cast her instead of a conventional beauty. Also, at the end of the film, I was expecting to see her finally get glammed up but they kept her in the same dowdy clothes when she went to meet Luke, so the Hollywood machine is not taking the easy path of turning her into just another sex symbol. I guess that is probably Kathleen Kennedy's influence on the franchise.

Even if the aliens were benign but authoritative and shared their technology and cleaned up the planet and brought peace and prosperity there would still be a faction who wanted to take back control

The aliens would do a better job of running the planet than us!

Well, long story short: If it goes well, the Tories reap the benefits and shape Britain in their image. If it goes badly, the Tories reap the benefits and shape Britain in their image.
