2 pointsApologies. I shall resume normal service when this blasted storm moves out of the way. For now as pretty much anyone who's looked out the window this morning is aware it is a bit wet and will remain a bit wet into this evenings. The models are trended towards a cold spell beginning around the 4th and 5th of December which could bring some snow to higher ground and pave the way for snow to lower ground in the following days, however there has not been anywhere near enough consistency from this and having been bitten by suggesting snowmaggedon one to many times I wouldn't be willing to put my neck out on it on this occasion; all it would take is another Atlantic low forming like the one we're currently under the cosh of to completely throw those charts to smithereens and possibly leave us in this neither winter wonderland cold/nor overly summery flux that we;'re in, although the rainfall totals might go someway to addressing the lack of rain in summer with regards to annual rainfall if we were to get that situation. The GFS this morning is showing what (for those of you who like cold weather and potential for snow) is what we want by the 4th - a : Ground level temps of around 1 or 2C. Unfortunately it's very much short lived, as the cold air that's encroached from the north at this point is forced back within 24 hours There's a bit of too and fro in the charts between cold and warm here, so were waiting for more consensus as to what happens after the initial cold blast, assuming no spanner in the works from another storm.

2 points^ When you see the last post is Deathray in The Weather Thread and are expecting some analysis heavy predictions... Bit underwhelming!

1 pointFunny thing is usually when out here in 'the middle of nowhere' the sky is thick with stars, many times you can see the Milky Way. Or at least that's how it was. Now there is so much activity in the oil patch that it's like small cities of lights and the light pollution really takes it's toll. Sad really. Two years ago I could marvel at the sky and imagine how people generations ago saw what I was now seeing. But now much of that is gone, though you can still see much more than back home in suburbia (well, in Louisiana -- the swamps lol). All that just to say this morning the lights from the rig I'm on are enough to ruin much of the sky, so when our friend Sirius is so prevalent it's quite fascinating. It's amazing how large an object it appears. SC

1 pointThat'll be the 'nose' of the constellation Canis Major and it's called Sirius. It's the brightest star in the whole of the night sky. Here's a view of the southwest sky as seen from Amarillo TX at the time of your post.

1 pointThis opens tomorrow, right? Second question - wtf happened to 2018 - wasn't it January like 5 minutes ago?
-
1 pointOkay, you are not insane then. By the way, have you ever looked into my home-grown UFO mystery, the Frederick Valentich case? Personally, I think he was flying upside down and confused by the reflection of his own plane's lights. One of the more interesting conspiracy theories is that he faked his death and re-emerged much later as the fraudster John Friedrich, which is a weird, weird story in its own right.
-
1 pointWell that was the end of the line. He has been rubbed out. Much ink was spilled in his obituaries. I'd better stop trying to be a comic now.

1 pointOh yes, I get what you mean. This is exactly what I felt as I was upset by 28 year old Avicii's suicide and a bit sad when 94 year old Aznavour had departed.

1 pointRIP Harry Leslie Smith, a fantastic campaigner for social justice and equality and someone I was proud to have as my friend

1 pointEnd of last chapter for Enid Blyton 50 years ago today. She was xenophobic and sexist 71 years old.

1 pointNew and returning suggestions Doddie Weir - not expected to see 2020 I.M Pei - This year's random new centenarian Nicholas Parsons - Missed two episodes of Just a Minute this year, now old enough to be a DL lock. Murray Walker - Old enough to be a DL lock to return. Ennio Morricone - retired this year, time he was on the list. Barbara Windsor - Dementia revealed this year. Peter Oosterhuis - has had Alzheimer's for a few years, Golf would add more representation to the list. Jean, Grand Duke of Luxembourg - 98 in January, an excuse to bring back a foreign royal on the list Rolf Harris - 89 next year, jail still fresh in the memory, has to be on the DL sometime. John McCririck - lost so much weight, looks really frail. Bill Treacher - 89 next year, EastEnders legend, time he was on the list. Sheila Mercier - 100 on New Year's Day, Emmerdale Farm legend, long overdue on the list.

1 pointI don't get it : why in the hell do you prefer to be vulgar towards someone else's idea that you disapprove instead of just letting it go ? You would waste less time and negativity, everyone would be pleased.

1 pointI had to look up Charles Van Doren as I have never heard of him, and I doubt I'm alone in that. So there's another reason.

1 pointNazi-turned Christian-turned proponent of US militarism, Hansi (Maria Anne Hirschmann) is still alive. She is famous for her autobiography, which was adapted as the even more famous comic book, Hansi: the Girl Who Loved the Swastika, back in the 1970s. She was working as a motivational speaker/propagandist around US military bases in the 1990s and has her own organisation, hansiministries.org. She also apparently got into trouble a few years ago for allegedly linking Obama with the Antichrist. http://www.militaryreligiousfreedom.org/press-releases/gazette-com-caved.html https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maria_Anne_Hirschmann Seems to me that Hirschmann is still a Nazi at heart but she has just swapped the trappings of German imperialism for those of Yank imperialism, including its right wing pseudo-religious window dressing.

0 pointsI hate anything which is branded as a gig you do something fun or you don't if you feel the need to use the word gig it probably means you have not enjoyed something as much as you thought you should have and yet you feel the need to show it off to the world

0 pointsAnnual obligatory Thomas Schafernaker. They sent him to a active hurricane ffs, and he has to be on something with those weather forecasts. Everybody should have this man top of their lists.
