Martin Van Buren died on this day 161 years ago, aged 79. - Van Buren was the first US president to be born after the country declared independence- he was born in 1782. - Van Buren was the only US president whose first language wasn't English; he primarily spoke Dutch, learning English while attending school. - Van Buren formed a law firm with his half-brother in 1803, and would be elected to the New York Senate in 1812. He became the state's attorney general in 1815, and would be elected to the US Senate in 1820. In 1828, he would be elected the governor of New York. Shortly after his election, the incoming Jackson administration asked him to be the Secretary of State, which he accepted (his term of 43 days is the shortest of any New York governor). - When John C. Calhoun resigned as Vice President in 1832, Andrew Jackson selecting him as his running mate that year. Van Buren would be elected president in 1836, largely thanks to the Whig Party nomination being split between four candidates. - Van Buren's presidency is best known for the Amistad Supreme Court case (which ruled in favor of slaves who mutinied on a slave ship), violence between Americans and Canadians on the border, and the Panic of 1837 financial crisis. Because of the latter, he lost the 1840 election in a landslide to William Henry Harrison- and also lost due to some of the first political advertisements from the Harrison-Tyler ticket: - Van Buren would run for president again in 1848 as a member of the antislavery Free Soil Party, receiving no electoral votes but 10% of the popular vote. - Van Buren was bedridden with pneumonia in late 1861 and early 1862 (definitely would've been on the list had it existed back then), and died from an asthma attack complicated by heart failure. He outlived four of his successors (Harrison, Tyler, Polk and Taylor) and lived to see eight presidents succeed him, the most of any US president (Jimmy Carter comes in second with 7).

@Paul Bearer - in ten years of lurking and over six of being an active contributor I have not once asked that something be done about trolls/pollution on the threads. That being said can we please, for the love of Christ, get this particular thread under control? Thank you in advance.

George Alagiah adds to the back up of scores needing updated. Unless we declare this dead. Edit: Yes. I picked him at #2. Lovely. So knee-ed in the nuts here, more than made up for in my picks in other pools.

Not sure about the Trevor Francis story, but former Newcastle 'keeper Shaka Hislop collapsed at pitchside while presenting coverage of the AC Milan/Real Madrid friendly in Pasadena Ca, yesterday. Apparently making a good recovery.

I would play this game but it feels extremely random to me There is something I want to do but don't want to run it as I already have three games on the go Essentially it would be covering the No.3-No.10 for all the years we have been doing but the songs are nominated so for example (if we picked 70's) each player would send (by DM) a list of ten songs which peaked at No. 3 -10 one from each year but they would only be allowed one song by any artist in the list. (Either the game runner can allow substitutes or if a song is duplicated the player who submitted second can offer up a replacement). Then depending on the number of players (I would expect 20-25 you can either do double years (5 qualify) or single years (3 qualify) the only other change I would make would be that until the first song is eliminated in each list you cannot up or down vote by more than 50% pf your allocation to a single song If I decide I am less busy when the current Killing of Saving ends I might try this but if someone else things this has legs you have my blessing to try and make it work

Larry the Bird has been euthanised; Space Karen is rebranding Twitter. It’ll soon be known as ‘X’. Presumably because a swastika isn’t readily available on a regular keyboard.

People seem to have issues with mobile formatting. My system isn't flawless, but it works for me: 1. Copy/paste (you know the deal). - 2. When you paste, you should be able to select "paste as plain text". This disappears after 5-10 seconds. If it doesn't work then some browsers have the same function beside "copy", "paste", and "select all". - 3. There should be no more italics or underlines left. But for the love of God, copy+paste your votes, instead of writing "The Manic Street preechers – if u Tolerate this Then You're children will Bee next". -

Hopefully ones you picked this year rather than last year!!! I'm thinking of making a team next year called Crumble's Crumbs, see if I can do better with your survivors from this year.
