Apart from Meghan Markle, people having not heard of things is the dullest recurring forum discussion this place has on a regular basis.

Never heard of Fawlty Towers - as, I believe, a fellow American, I will say you are missing out. Very few episodes and absolutely brilliant, and I’m not an Anglophile or anything. Give it a watch sometime.

He's the host of the long awaited UK version of Jeopardy, which @Death Impends can hardly wait to be bored senseless hearing about in January.

09/12/23 7:42am 33 Pulp — Common People 28 Kylie Minogue — Confide In Me 27 Natalie Imbruglia — Torn -6 25 The Cardigans — Lovefool 25 Madonna — Beautiful Stranger 23 James — Sit Down 21 Deee-Lite — Groove Is In The Heart +4 20 Supergrass — Alright / Time 17 The Verve — Bitter Sweet Symphony 15 Fatboy Slim — Right Here, Right Now 10 Ace Of Base — The Sign 09 Blur — Song 2 FTR I think The Sign is one of the 3-4 best tracks on the list including all the songs but I haven’t voted for it. It’ll be sad to see AoB go so ‘early’ at least as compared to a few songs still going that have no redeeming qualities. Fun fact: It is also the answer to ‘name the only band whose debut album had three #1 hits’ (in Yankland). Most people say The Beatles or whatever. I had a pal guessed Men at Work (a great guess) but they only had two that topped the chart, a third stalled in the top 10. The correct answer being Ace of Base. There’s your trivia for the day. I think all three songs/whole album was brilliant.

Ah, you were just a bairn in 1988 I'm sure. Whereas I was finishing my law degree and heading to postgrad study! I'm actually fascinated by 1988. Resurgence of some old numbers re-entering the charts, some new work from long-established artistes, the rise of Acid House and rave culture, increasing Euro-pop entries and still quite the dearth of rap at this stage, though some important groundwork for the 90s in that genre. This year, more than any other of the 1980s, has the most disparate and eclectic mix of Top 30-ers I have seen. I have 4 nailed on picks, 3 I want to pick out of fondness and the rest - well, I just know I'm going to miss a huge name. Still, I'm unable to pick Madonna, basically because I can't stand the vast majority of her work. If I do miss her, so be it, amen and thanks for all the crap - lol.

Not a good period for Xi. China's economy is facing troubles and he has recently purged Foreign Affairs minister Qin Gang and Defense Minister Li Shanfu apparently with no explanation. He seems to be disliked by the progressive wing of CCP (the late Li Keqiang, Hu JIntao's clique, elders as Tian Jiyun, Hu Qili, Zhu Rongji) and even by the old school hardliners (like Song Ping). Recently he received strong direct critique from Chi Haotian and Zheng Qinghong and was reportedly furious after the meeting. He seems just like a pale copy of Mao Zedong, I don't think he will hold power for life as he wishes.

King Malcolm IV of Scotland died on this day 858 years ago, aged 24. - Malcolm became the heir apparent to the Scottish throne when his father Henry died when he was 11- and became king the next year after the death of his grandfather David I. - Malcolm would attempt to gain the favor of Henry II of England by having several diplomatic meetings with him (accepting ceding Scottish land in exchange for English land), and would be knighted by him after assisting him in besieging Toulouse in 1159. - Malcolm would then face a rebellion in Moray in 1163, and managed to disperse the revolting populace. - Malcolm reigned for twelve years, but died at a young age from what historians believe was hastened by Paget's disease (a bone disorder). His death at said age led to his epithet "Malcolm the Maiden", or "Malcolm Virgo" (also fitting due to his death as a virgin). His younger brother William I would succeed him as king.

I'd argue he'd QO, as the BBC did publish an article about his tumor when it was announced he was in treatment. Could be a solid pick, assuming he's just not keeping a low profile. Don't see much on his social media accounts for example.

"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" beat Mariah Carey to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It took 65 years since release to make it to the top, and is Brenda Lee's first number one song on the chart since 1960's "I Want to Be Wanted". She's also the oldest living person to top the chart- she turns 79 in a week.

It would be nice if he could live to see another Labour Prime Minister but it will probably be Keir Starmer so you wouldn't be able to tell.
